I use a Nikon D-70 digital SLR. Awesome, but may be more than what you are looking to spend.

It depends on how you will be using the camera. I had (still have) an SLR that takes wonderful pics, tons of resolution, etc, but I found I take a lot more pics using something smaller and less complicated. Which camera is "better"?, if you're talking pic quality, the SLR hands down. I happen to think "better" is the one I will use more often. I have a Casio 3.2 mp exelim. Small, takes good enough pics...i really like it. I really don't worry about it as much as I would an $800+ camera, which is nice. Especially taking it on the boat.

Casio Cameras (http://www.casio.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=products.section&catalog=Cameras&section=EXILIM%20Series)

Pentax makes the Casios. They have models of their own that are slightly different cosmetically.

Good luck and shop around for price....
