I'm currently undergoing engine compartment stringer and transom restoration due to some rot. All of the hardware is out of the boat for this repair. Should I go one step further and pull the deck off to check for fuel tank problems or other issues forward. Is it that hard to pull the deck? My fear is that I will pull the deck, the boat will deform and I won't be able to get it back on easily. Do the hull sides need to be braced when you pull the deck or are they stiff enough to maintain their shape on their own. How much does a 22C deck weigh? Any help would be appreciated.

Greg, it's VERY easy.
Take a look at this;

I found it very simple, and easy. I did all this work by myself. I had almost no help.
Besides the tank, I made a number of other modifications designed to build a stronger, and longer lasting boat.
The Minx deck weighs about 500#. Don't worry about the hull deforming. I had my deck off about four months, and the deck went back on easily.

No, it is metal, either aluminum or steel.

Greg, even if the tank is OK, removing the deck is one of the best time saving things you can do.
I tried to do everything I could with the deck removed as it so much easier.

I agree pull the top off.

See my post also.

I replaced the stringers and transom all the way to the tank.

Email me if you would like to see some pictures.

Fuel tanks often only last ten years. If you are interested in doing the job right, take the deck off. You'll be able to really take care of the stringers, gussets, bulkheads, etc. etc.

Thanks for the advice. If I have to replace the fuel tank, is a fuel cell the way to go, or just a standard tank? I'm not sure what makes fuel cells better or safer then tanks, can anybody explain?

Greg, check out;

I thank you will find tanks are less than 1/2 the cost of a fuel cell, and if installed properly, should last over 20 years. :)

So, to install a new tank, do I use foam or no foam???? Just kidding, don't want to open that can of worms again...
