Through a set of interesting circumstances, I'm now the owner of a five gallon drum of Amsoil synthetic gear oil.
Obviously I need some for my Minx. But I'm willing to share. How much does this stuff retail for? I'm willing to sell it by the quart or gallon for 1/2 of retail.
PM or email me.

George, We have an Amsoil dealership (??? I guess that's what they call it) just to get a break on fluids for all our vehicles. Between Dad and I we have 12 crank cases, tranny's and diffs to fill. The price is: AGL - $136, There are three different type of 80W-90. Is yours the marine lower unit type?
Hope this helps.

Here are the specs;
MIL-PRF-2105E
Auto Spec- GL-2 thru GL-5
Mack GO-J
API-MT-1

I had no idea there were so many differences.

Is there a reason I shouldn't use this in my Alpha?

George, Dad has the cataloge and is looking it up. Do you know what the Asoil spec is? Either AGL, AGT or ALU. I'm not sure if the MIL or AUTO spec is in the book. They list by vehicle model.
Wes
PS, Give me the year and model of the Alpha, I will check to see if it's in the book.

You should have part number AGL-05, the standard 80w-90 synthetic gear lube. Same stuff we have use in all our customers drives and lowers. As as side note it is the only gear lube that we have tried in the Diff of our Ford350 (Dana 60 Posi) that does not hum at highway speeds. We sell it for 8.95 per quart. Since you have a free 5 gallon pail, I would keep it and change your drive oil every 25hrs. This would long live your drive. As an additional note, Amsoil has introduced a Severe Gear lube for 2005 (part number SVG). It is supposed to have additional film strength over the AGL. We are going to switch to this once our barrel of AGL is empty.

TSJ, you are correct. AGL-05.
Wes, my boat is an '86 Minx. It has the original drive (but at least the third engine). If need be I could go to the warehouse and get the #.
Thanks everyone.

BTW, my drive # is A688905.
If anyone here has access to the Merc database, I would appreciate any additional info that might be there.

TSJ is correct. We are getting the 05 cataloge and going with the SVG oil for my Bravo. Sounds like he has much more experience with drives and syn oils than I.

A couple of years ago I called Amsoil and talked to an engineer on the difference between the lower unit gear oil and the regular syn gear oil. Ans: The package. So I went with the Series 2000 75-90 my drives. As noted by others they have new extreme duty oils now. Will go with that next time.

Interestingly, I just changed oil in my Bimmer M6 w/ Redline MT-90. One of the other oils I looked at was a new oil they have called ShockProof. It comes in three "weights" SuperLight, Light and Heavy. These oils have some kind of additive that cushions gearteeth. The Heavy has an equivalent fluid weight of SAE 250, but supposedly flows like 80x140.

I'm running an Alpha behind a 454 and am thinking about using this for my next change...currently using Amsoil. (Given that an Alpha behind a 454 is the moral equivalent of an hand grenade w/ a loose pin.)
