Craig,
Is the drive a chain or gear drive?
The only change needed to a 1721, to handle more power, in a small boat, is to change to straight cut gears. The stock bevel gears will put to much pressure on the case and crack it. I run normally run 870hp and up to 825 ftlbs and my 1721 seams to be holding up. But I take it easy on the throttle...

Rik, at Arneson Industries makes and sells the straight cut gears.
If you don't want the drive I may be interested.

Geoo: its a chain drive , but I know where there is a gear drive 1721, Do you think 7500LBs v hull @620 hp single with a gear upgrade will take it?

Craig,
Call Rik and ask him. My boat weigh's around 3200 lbs. Big difference.
I think the chain drive is easy to convert to a gear drive. (Just take out the chain and gears and put in the new straight cut gears. www.arneson-industries.com

Thanks Geoo, It probably wouldnt hold up , since this is a new project and Ive blown enough drives on my Z, I think Bigger is better than cheaper, I sent Rik an email, see what he can do. The inline ASD6 1.0.1 will handle 650 HP,and I am looking to price a ZF or simalar 7 degree down angle ,this takes up more room in the engine compartment,I may be okay , but I really wanted to keep the CG back. http://www.donzi.net/ubb/smile.gif

George do you feel the gears are better than chain, they rate them the same on the A site. I had wondered about it in the past.

Craig,
I don't think a non blown 600hp + big block would break a 1721 with the gear upgrade. Ask Rik...

MOP,
In stock form the chain can handle more power. But with a gear upgrade the gear can take a lot more. I think the chain and gear units both use the same case, so it's easy to change a chain unit to a gear unit. The weak link with the older 1721 units (with very high hp700+)is the thrust foward and aft from the bevel gears, the gear upgrade has straight cut gears and does away with any thrust issues.

Well I allmost Bought It but Rik wanted to know where my CG was and being a new boat, I couldn't say, no power in yet. So Iam going to put ballest in the boat and find out where the CG would be if I used a single BB.If the CG is to far foward , it will be to slow!
I may end up back on the drawing board, better that than messing up bad .
Thanks RIK :crossfing

I think you need about 900 pounds of "ballast" in there Craig, appropriately forward to allow for the B/W or ZF or whatever you have a coming. Do you have an overhead hoist available?

I regularly rent a large K/W with a 10T crane on it. He also has spreader bars and all that stuff. A nice feature is a fairly accurate scale that sits on the hook and ball of the crane so you could also get a decent weight reading of your lay-up. Get a ten foot straight spreader on it, double up the straps, and make some "baby" lifts on it and get an approxiamate C of G.

Thats a really good idea Lenny, with the crane and scale. I am more worried about the CG being to far foward even with the stand off box drive , its just to hard to tell by looking at it

Are the straight cut gears very loud?
Can you hear them above the exhaust?
