Instead of removing the brass plugs to drain the blocks, why couldn't you remove one of the hoses to the thermastat that runs to the block and stick a small hose down that to suck out the water?

Like in this picture the hose above the drain plug connecting to the thermastat?

Cause of the passages in the block, the drain plugs are at the lowest point in the water passages on the block, OH, do not forget the manifolds !! and also peace of mind .

Why bother, remove 4 plugs, 2 hoses, less than 5 minutes work and your done.

Don't forget the oil cooler plug.

After you open the drain cock all the way, stick a stiff wire up the opening and wiggle it. Usually some rusty junk will come out along with another slug of water.
