I am working on a project with a board member and we have run into some information claiming that some newer Volvo 270's and 180's can not be installed on older 250 transom housings because of a difference in the helmet bolt configuration. The older style having one bolt the newer style having two bolts. I have never heard of this and was under the impression and 270/280 will fit right on an older transom housing without a problem.

Anyone out there have any info?

Chris,
yes there is a difference in the helmut and also the tiller arm
you should be able to take the old helmut and tiller arm and use it on the newer drive( basically use all the old connecting stuff up top and use the newer drive), also look out for different transom plates where the tiller arm goes different diameters.
we ran into this on the cig project 2 different verisons of the 270
drop me a line if I can be of any help,
I think I might have some pics too
or call me 845-477-3916

I think you can get away with just changing the helmet, give Pete a call at Long Island Marine 516 764 3300 he will have the answer.

Keep the helmut together with it's drive (or upper housing) and the steering fork together with it's transom shield and it should be all good. The hole/bushing/bolt(s) connection from the helmut to the drive is different between the two types you refer to. I believe there is a third type as well. The connection from the helmut to the steering fork is the same for all that I've seen.

Frank
270 Transom Shield + 200 Drive = No reverse catch.

Thanks Frank better wording, thats what I was trying to get across. The later two bolt should be retained it is much stronger.
