I missed the what type question so I thought I would throw this in.
My Volvo Mechanic HIGHLY recommended by Big Grizz, says to use in my 290, Amsoil 80W-90 GL-4 synthetic marine gear lube.
And Forrest had this to say back in June or 04

Forget using any kind of motor oil, synthetic or not, in your 250, 270, 280 or 290 for high performance use. You should run real GL-4 or GL-5 gear lube. Motor oil IS NOT suitable for the shearing forces found high-load gear applications. I ran Redline MT-90 gear oil in my 280Ts which is specificlly suitable for cone clutches. The result was much smoother shifting than with motor oil as well as a cooler running drive. The only down side to using the Redline MT-90 was that it cost $8 a quart.

yes as said 90weight no motor oil, and it depends on the length of the drive leg can range from like 2.2 to 3.5 or something , but 2.8 seems to be the number leave the dipstick loose and check as you fill

When you fill a Volvo under pressure, either a pressure can or just sqeezing a tube leave the dip stick loose in the hole. If you pick and drop the dip stick repeatedly about a 1/2" it has a clinky metal sound, as soon as the oil hits the tip the sound goes dull the drive is full. Screw the stick in it will be at the correct level between the lines. Using that method is a lot less messy than draining to correct level, important do not over fill it as it can blow the seals out the oil has to have the room for expansion. It is a good idea to recheck level after a short run and cool down.

Gotta a question for you!!

I just changed the drive oil and went with Amsoil gear oil. I noticed as I drained the drive of old oil... I was getting water mixed with oil. I cannot get a good seal on the dipstick...the threads are tired. I have replaced the washer also to no avail.

Any tricks I should know about!!

Thanks,

KJ

Kirk pull the top cap off and have the thread Heli Coiled, not expensive and better than original.
