there are many places in the city that make great pizza, I've been out of the bronx now 29 years, and I go back all the time was back last week stopped at the local pizza joint louie and ernies the kids run the show louie and ernie are long gone but the same great pie and only in the city can you get 2 to go and they are folded and put into a paper bag no paper plate or little box ! Lombardi's in Lil Italy makes a good pizza on a coal oven, they make a white pizza with clams a killer!

looks like you're gonna have to get used to deep dish chicago pizza ;)

I know L&B Spumoni Gardens well!

I'm originally from Canarsie, Brooklyn..spent many Friday & Saturday nights at L&B..after cruising 86th street of course! http://www.donzi.net/ubb/graemlins/biggrin.gif

Totonnos on Neptune is good too..but we did Lenny & John's too..was good in a pinch http://www.donzi.net/ubb/wink.gif

High Patti,

Cruising 86th street of course! From Whitecastles Stillwell ave to 7th ave where Roy Rogers then Mac Donalds was depending on your age.

I'm from a few different neighborhoods, and had friends and hung out in all of them. I grew up near prospect park CrownHeights area, moved to old Milbasin with my parents = Ave L & 58th St. near Ralph ave . I had an apartment in Canarsie, E 84th st & Glenwood rd. when I was first married, divorced with-in three yr's then back to ave L.
I then married a Canarsie girl from E 87 St & ave L a few years later, and we're still together. Stayed in B'klyn until 83' before moving up-state near Kingston in Ulster County.

So I guess you hung out on the "L" as it was called in Canarsie, as a kid you probably went to the Seaview movie theater alot and to the Seaview Diner just before the Belt/pwy afterwards on Seaview ave.

I miss boating in Milbasin,Bergen beach, Jamaica bay, GarrisonBeach and Sheepshead bay or head down in the other direction to Howard beach and Broad Channel along with all the fun places to go and eat or play, we never got bored of boating or driving. But most of those places i'm sure are long gone now.
Yeah!, scoot down Neptune ave and spend time in Coney Island, almost every day of the week we had a different event going on, from fireworks to dragracing.

Sorry I rambled on, you just wanted to know what neighbor hood I was from and I went on a history tour. :jestera:

So did you go to Southshore or Canarsie High?

Big Ed’ s Pizza in Oak Ridge TN is still my favorite.

Walt http://www.donzi.net/ubb/graemlins/biggrin.gif

I remember ALL of those things :jestera:

I went to South Shore..I WANTED to go to Canarsie but was zoned for SS by one block..I remember hanging out at the Arch & Arthur Treachers..hey..do you remember Wetsons? lol

My moms family was from Canarsie..my grandparents house was on Rockaway Parkway & N..we only recently sold the house when my uncle died..did you know any Shaughnessy's?

I remember going with my dad to Canarsie pier..this was way before they did it over though and they used to have the bait house..but that sunk..I remember going with him to watch it fall into the water lol

I lived on 92nd between Glenwood & Farragut before moving to 98th and Farragut..and then I left Brooklyn altogether.

I had family that lived on 55th & L..my sister was on 54th between K&L and I still have a friend who lives on 57th near N..that area which I thought would never changed has kind of gone the route that Canarsie has gone.

My nephew is a cop at the 69..he said Canarsie is a sh!t hole now..which is sad..it was a great place to grow up.

I used to hang out at Bildersee to play hand ball..went to the Nosher and the bagel store..noone made bagels like Bell bagels on 81st and Flatlands!

86th street was the place to be ..we used to watch the guido's drive their daddys caddies lol..then we'd go over to Bay Ridge and go to TJ Bentleys or the Brown Derby..talk about a long time ago lol

Going to PIPS..or Lundy's..my dad used to go fishing outta Sheepshead Bay..Do you remember Guarino's at Christmas? All the decorations?

When I was a kid we used to go to Kingston every summer..there was a bungalow colony up there..small world lol

My family has all left Brooklyn now..it's like they crossed the bridge and they are in the promised land http://www.donzi.net/ubb/wink.gif :jestera:

Staten Island is just Brooklyn with Hills..I mean it's a really nice area..just very over crowded and over priced..my son was raised outside of NYC..so he is looking forward to us getting to Michigan and getting out of NY lol

You made a good choice when you left..it's changed so much over the years that I really won't be sad to leave http://www.donzi.net/ubb/smile.gif I've been gone from Brooklyn since 1993..I go back to Bay Ridge on the weekends and such if we all go out..but that's about it..Haven't been to Canarsie in forever..I'm kind of scared to go there lol

There is a site..Canarsie.com .. kind of cheesy..but the guy who ows Realist Photo on 80th & Flat runs it..has lots of pictures and message boards..and a member list..i've found a lot of people I was friends with http://www.donzi.net/ubb/smile.gif

Keep in touch..it's nice talking to someone from my neck of the woods! http://www.donzi.net/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Patti,

No, i'm sorry I don't recall anyone by the name Shaughnessy but of course it does sound very familiar. I believe that bait house you mentioned was "Mary's Bait Barge".

E.92nd St?
I had a friend that had a shop on E92 St & ave D that built racing automatic transmissions for drag racing, "Vitar Engineering". The speed shop I worked for at that time did alot of mutual work together, Victory Automotive located at 1287 Utica ave between foster & ave D.
I lived on the corner of Ave L & E,58th St, real close to your family. Between E55th &56 on L had a grocery store that all the kids would buy soda and stuff on their way to the park behind my folk's house and leave their broken bottles to anger my dad :cussball:
Your nephew is correct sorry to say.

I remember that term = guidos quite well, it means cousin in Italian " well not really" and they also drove Chevy Montecarlo decked out the same way with the Rollsroyce radiator grills. Do you remember when Janet Polosi was killed on ave K and E 84 st in her Honda civic by a kid running from the police in a stolen chev, hit her head on. That really shook up the neighbor hood for a very long time, she was a friend to a few people I knew at that time and one that became my wife, we talk of her often and are still friends with her cousin Lee and Vinny.
We still have a few friends left and their parents living in Carnarsie and Marine Park area if you can call it living, when you have iron bars and gates over your windows and doors but thats about it. :crossfing :rlol:

Best regards,

Walt :wavey:

Walt :wavey:

No..this bait house was on the pier itself, well right off the pier..on the right side as you came around the circle going onto the belt..but I do know of Mary's! http://www.donzi.net/ubb/smile.gif

I did hear about Janet..most of my family was concentrated on the other side of Canarsie..Past Remsen from Foster down to Seaview..but did have some family on 88th & L..now THAT is dead now..Kenny's went out of business and the whole L seemed to fall apart..I still remember as a kid..I went to the Canarsie theater and saw Wonderama live http://www.donzi.net/ubb/eek.gif Man..i'm getting old! lol

I remember when Vickie Mallano was kiled by a hit and run..that was on 88th and Glenwood..down the block from Stellas Pharmacy and DiBlasi bakery..my friend parents owned that actually..she was only 6 I believe..was horrible http://www.donzi.net/ubb/frown.gif

It sure has changed a lot..but I don't think about that now..I just remember how nice it used to be http://www.donzi.net/ubb/smile.gif

I still have some friends that live on the fringe..Georgetown, Mill Basin/Marine Park..they are die hards..they won't go lol

Even new Mill Basin..with the multi million dollar homes has changed a bit..which is shocking actually considering who the residents are http://www.donzi.net/ubb/graemlins/biggrin.gif

The Guidos..ahh..a species all their own :jestera: had lots of guys friends who belonged to that club..they hung out at the Bamboo on Rockaway & N..it became Le Parc years later..I remember many drunken nights there lol

My mom still talks about how they'd go to bed with doors wide open back in the day..uhhh..not anymore I tell her :rlol:
