Just curious how everyone got their nick for the site.
About mine, I'm in Texas (so Tx ) and when I was working for a home health care company as a programmer/network admin/computer tech, basically the only person to handle everything for 200 computers, one of the nurses labled me as taz since I was always running in, tearing things apart and running out. Since then it just stuck.
I'm sure there are some good stories out there.

the home of the oldest horse racing track in the country - When my kids were younger we created a tip sheet that the kids hawked at the track. The name of the tip sheet was Daboys - named for my three sons with a 1930's gangster theme. They enjoyed selling the sheets, made some money and had a few laughs, Yes - the handicapping tips worked well for those that purchased the tipsheet. They did this for 6 years and the name kind of stuck. :biggrin.:

Team Jefe

Great Idea Wes.

Well boys and Girls it is a fanciful tale of how the Mild Mannered shy young man know as Jeff, became the larger than life Persona of "El Jefe".

It started many years ago right after I graduated from High School. I took a summer job at an industrial painting company for the amazing rate of $6.25/hr….not bad money for 1986. So, I show up on day one at the yard, not knowing at all what to expect. Of course I was driving a Big Truck…..Its me after all….1978 Ford F250 4X4, extended cab, Long bed, Emerald Flake Green, with a 460 sporting a Holley 850 Double-pumper and 33” mudders. I still miss that truck, but I digress.

The crew boss asked me if I was willing to use my truck to transport the guys back and forth to the plant everyday. He was willing to pay mileage and buy my gas…..Well Hell yeah I willing. So, we load up and head out to the Monsanto Plant at Chocolate Bayou. On the way the Guys, all Mexican Nationals, asked me my name. Now they did not speak English and I don’t speak Spanish so it took a little while for me to figure out what they wanted. “mi yama, Juan”, “es, Roberto”….but even I catch on eventually and took a few seconds trying to figure out how to say Jeff in Spanish. Living in Texas for most of my life I did learn a few Spanish things like the fact that “J” is pronounced like “H” and, as a redneck, one should always add an “eh” or “ah” or “oh” to the end of all Spanish words. So my pronunciation came out as “jhefa”…and they said “Jefe”…yeah, “Jefe” that’s it “Jefe” and I was so proud I got it right……….or maybe not……..for the rest of the day these guys did not say anything to me, even during lunch I was summarily ignored….like I was some kinda Leper. Great, this is going to be a real fun summer.

Finally the day ended and we got back to the yard, where the Juan Roberto and the guys all made a beeline for the crew boss and had some heated discussions on an unknown subject. After a little bit the boss, also Hispanic, burst out in a belly laugh that would not stop. He came over to me and said “well hi there JEFE, have a good Day?” and I told him of the cold shoulder treatment. He then explained that “Jefe” means Boss in Spanish and the guys thought I was telling them that I was the boss because we were riding in my truck. We all then had a good laugh and they started calling me “Jefe Jeff” which eventually got shortened to “Jefe”.

I carried this handle with me when I became a Fightin’ Texas Aggie. Again, I was very shy and reserved…painfully so. I knew I would not enjoy my time at A&M unless I could shake off the shyness. So, I invented an alter Ego and gave him the name Jefe. Actually, Most of the people who knew me in College don’t know my real name…I will always be “El Jefe”.

This is the crazy guy most of you know and love today. He lives without fear of what somebody else thinks, and does everything that is cool…..even if it is not practical. I eventually grew up and melded the two personalities together so I am not a Sybil Psychopath on the loose. But Jefe definitely comes out at certain times, like when I’m hurtling down the road at 90MPH with Jefe’s Revenge behind me and ALL The time I am on Jefe’s Revenge.

That’s the story…….to be clear, it is pronounced “Hef-a” with a long “a”
Not “Geef” or “Jeffy”

……..and I still can’t speak Spanish !

Our first boat was (is) a '61 Century Resorter 17', 327 CI Graymarine. The dual side draft Carter YH carbs were a problem and it was a leaky hull on its best day. One day I decided to pull the motor and address the ongoing difficulties once and for all. While the engine was out I decided to roll the hull over and do a critical examination of the bottom. How this vessel stayed afloat is anyones guess! I proceeded to pull planks off and ended up replacing the stem, forefoot, keel, all the frames etc. With the boat in an advanced stage of disassembly my wife happened to ask if A. I thought I could put it back together. And B. Was I going to name it. Now Centurys were known as " The Thoroughbred of Boats" and in 1980 Genuine Risk won the 106th running of the Kentucky Derby, only the second filly to do so, and ran second in the Preakness and in the Belmont. Aware of my limited carpentry skills and gazing at the pile of lumber that had, at one time, been my boat, I thought Genuine Risk was fitting.

gold-n-rod
11-09-2004, 03:10 PM
Gold-n-rod comes from the name of my 24 Mach One. I bought the boat nearly new and unnamed. I've always like the old raceboat names of the '30's, the ones with the -n- in the name, like bust-n-loose, the kind of thing that was a play on words.

My Mach is bright yellow and is a bit of a hot rod with its 454 and straight pipes, so I settled on gold-N-rod. I use if for user names and even my hotmail account. The only problem is that people often want to substitute goldenrod, the proper noun. Oh well, it fits and it stays.

from many trips on the road looking for the right 22 Classic.
Thousands of miles and trails of tears, but she is nestled away in the barn now and has served us well. Man, the Donzi disease bit me bad and gave me the drive to hit the road many times, only to come home empty-handed.

"SE" suffix is a play on the sport edition that Donzi put out for a few years. Since I built my own, I call it the Somerville Edition or SE for short. Perhaps I should have called it the Ted Edition since he gave me the inspiration to try it, but the sweat was mine, so I'll stick with SE.

Of course I am also known as "The Evil Twin" when running with the Doctor and perhaps a few other references of off color depending on who you talk to within this gang!

MOP
11-09-2004, 05:20 PM
Well I raised 5 chocolate face, curtain climbing, ankle biting rug rats! They nick named me MOP, they for a long time would not tell me what it referred to. One day Michael my oldest got me aside and said it stood for "MEAN OLD PHIL" I am dense and should have figured it out. It came from the fact that I never hit them or raised my voice to them but maintained absolute control by getting even. Every time they screwed up I would make the gesture of writing on my hand making notes their beady little eyes would roll back and they would skulk off knowing that when the next great thing came up for them to do they would not get to do it. The principal of the high school got me aside during the last ones graduation and asked how the hell I keep them in line, I said with a nick name like MOP need you ask. I am proud to say the little buggers turned way past my expectations and drained my pocket book, I have a lawyer, a CEO, a Contractor, a financial analyst and a medical billing firm for kids. The buggers better take real good care of MOP down the road or I will haunt them until they are DUST!

Interesting - I've heard a similar story about how RickR named his boat (series of boats) "Genuine Risk." And mine is of course a derivative of his - "Genuine Trouble."

Now my nickname is only what it is because I like it and it is un-imaginative. It's not a nickname- it's a login name.

1996Z15 refers to the Corvette that I used to own. 1996 was the year of the car and Z15 is the option code for a Silver Anniversary model. I used this name on the Corvette Forum website and, at the time I registered on the Donzi Registry, I didn't have a Donzi so I used my Corvette name; both the 'Vette and the Donzi are gone so.

I'm using my first name and last initial, not very creative.

If I was to use the nick name that my older brother gave me as a kid I would be competing against part of the name Geoo calls his boat. That was my favorite cartoon show when I was 8 or 10 and it stuck for many years. Three of my earlier boats carried that name too.

Walt :wavey: That photo below of my Glaspar G-3 was taken sept, 1967 The day of my very first sanctioned race in the Howard Beach Regatta out in Queens, NY. The second photo is of my 68' Carlson Contender Also named "Blue Mouse" taken a yr or two later in MillBasin, B'klyn, NY.

I have asked them many times how I got the nickname and all they say is "Uncle Fester, the dead body molester"? Must be referring to that 10 year older than me ex wife bitch that they call "auntie".

Anyway, I'm not old -33. I'm not short -5'10", and I ain't bald -yet :crossfing

Now that I'm getting divorced they've just been calling me Fester.

Great stories everybody...C'mon Digger where's yours again.... he he he.

Well Sagbay was supposed to be Saginaw bay...but it was too long for AOL 6 years ago when I started using it. The 32 was my age at the time.

The reason I picked it has to do with moving down state to where my fiance' lived. I grew up boating, fishing, and hunting on Saginaw Bay and had a hard time moving away from her (the Bay that is :biggrin.: ). I thought it would kind of remind me where I came from.

We still go up to the Bay, but not as much as I would like :hyper:

There's some good stories with these!

MPHATC was coined by my son, who was living with his Mom. When I bought my first BMW M3 he wanted me to have a vanity plate, and kept coming up with a ton of them and would email them to me. At the time my relationship with him was rather distant, and I wanted to create a stronger bond with him in a big way. I relented to this as he was very excited about it.

M is for the M in BMW M car
PHAT . . kid talk at the time for COOL
C, making it emphatic

Unfortunately for me MPHATC on a license plate looks like MPH ATC . . as in Miles Per Hour Adict . . . and in 11 months with absolutely no change in my driving style I racked up enough points speeding to almost loose my license!!! Ofcourse I admit the car looked and still looks the part, but the funny thing is that after changing back to a number plate I haven't been stopped again!!! And prior to this plate I had a clean record!!!

Was it worth it? Absolutely, a year later my son moved to live with me, and we have the best relationship I could ever imagine. His requests now are when I die he gets the Donzi Corsican and my M3! Sorry son, I'm hangin around for a while!

Morgan's Cloud
11-15-2004, 02:02 PM
In 1775, in Philadelphia, the American Continental Congress announced a trade embargo against all colonies remaining loyal to the Crown. When Bermuda tried to bargain with salt, the American colonies refused and requested gunpowder instead. George Washington himself wrote to Bermuda, saying the cause was just for him to obtain the supply. A copy of his letter is still available in Bermuda for interested locals and visitors. A group of Bermudians led by the infamous Captain Morgan became sympathetic to the Revolution and on August 14, 1775 stole the island's supply of gunpowder from the British Army's Powder Magazine in St. George's, rolled it down the hill to Tobacco Bay and shipped it to the rebels in America. The embargo was then lifted. The infamous "Gunpowder Plot" created a sensation in Bermuda where those loyal to the Crown were outraged at the treason of certain Bermudians. They gave such hell and persecution to Morgan that he died a broken man.

Local legend has it that on the anniversary of his death in June every year his restless spirit is manifested in a cloud the exact shape of the Island hanging overhead all day. Of course the alternative is a narrow unbroken cloud band running the length of the Island.

Both are known as 'Morgan's Cloud'

Best viewed from the water and even better on your DONZI

:spongebob Well... I guess I'll clarify mine...many of you have heard this ...but most haven't.

In my former life I lived in Boulder, Colorado....my "Practice Wife" Claire was finishing her degree upstate a bit in Fort Collins at Colorado State University....when we moved ...ya have to get all of your addressed items changed. When our Credit Union sent me my new checks...they came through with Dr. Daniel J. Johnides on the Header?

I called them and said What's the Deal, and what are you gonna do about it.....? They confirmed the account number and apologized for the Error, and said we'll send a new Box of checks out right away! I said terrrific ....but what should I do in the meantime, I had bills to pay?

They acknowledged that they really didn't care what the name was on the account as long as it "Drafted" on the correct account, and they said be a Doctor for 200 checks?

So Dr. Dan was born...my last name being Greek, and people calling me every thing but how it is suppposed to be pronounced, Dr. Dan or Doc became handy!

FYI ...last name is pronounced "Ya Nee This' " act like your mouth is full of Olives and you drank to much Wine and you'll hit it on the head like the Greeks do....

So that's the Deal...had it since 1987....all of my companies that I have worked for including Mohawk Industries(current) know me more by Dr. Dan than they do by my full name.

Doc :p

Just in case anyone had their doubts as to the authenticity of my story the following is the local weather forecast for tomorrow .

*A weak ridge of high pressure remains in place into Tuesday as a few passing showers and a chance of thunder remain in the area. There is a slight chance of thunder tomorrow afternoon as a Morgan's Cloud is expected to develop. Winds will gradually increase throughout the week as a low develops and stalls to the west. *

It's VERY rare for the forecasters to actually predict a possible Morgan's Cloud so I couldn't resist it .

As for the chance of rain or thunder , I doubt it , we're in the midst of a drought !

My parents named me Nick when I was born...I had nothing to do with it. Might be because my Father's name is Nick...dunno.

As far as BiggieFL goes....When I was 20 I bought myself a Corvette for college graduation. I wanted a vanity plate and in NJ you sent in like 5 requests and got pot luck. I was watching Meatballs 2 and Jackie Mason pulls up in a white Corniche with BIGSHOT on the plate. I said how can you get any vainer than that and on the Vette they went. So I used to use Bigshot as my screen name but too many trolls out there would pick fights with me about it. So because of my name and my Boston Whaler club many nicked named me Biggie because calling me Bigshot all day....anyways. Biggie is taken many times when I find a new site so I am BiggieFL as I live in FL. In case you are wondering I have never renewed the BIGSHOT plates when I moved to FL. It was a one "shot" deal as I am not that vain. My plate now says BUZMEG and if anyone here is Hungarian.....it's not personal.

Ah, what the hell. Might as well keep a nine year old thread going.:p

I used to play a lot of bar trivia when I lived in NH. I needed a name to post on up on the screen. So, I came up with Tidbit, as in tidbits of information.

To get myself out of the bars, I bought a Donzi and joined this registry on advice of the previous owner. I needed a handle for the board so I picked Tidbit. After some time had passed, I found out that I could change the name quite easily. So, I changed it to Tidbert. At the time, there was a website called Bertisevil.com that humored me. Some time later, I needed a change, and ran across this Bart Simpson avatar that I thought was clever, him mooning the world. So, I changed it to the current Tidbart. Been that way ever since. :D

Bob

I've known Bob going on 10 years, and that's the same story he told me.
Maybe it's true! ;)

Spent my teenage years with Hungarian friends
Gabe Zolna, Peter Friesz, etc etc

Went to my first Hungarian play and my seat # was
HH33 Excuse the spelling but I pronounced it
HaHa harlemmince harlem

I learned all the easy words like pencil, pen, water,
come here as I bought a Doberman that only understood Hungarian

They taught me how to say sexy things to my Hungarian dates and I would get my face slapped and never see them again..

Sorry for stealing the thread bought it brought back many memories,Ed

So anyway , How did you come across using the name "Ed Donnelly"?

Spent my whole life on GM car lots since quitting school at 15. Bought my first franchise (Chevrolet Oldsmobile Pontiac Buick GEO GMC) in 92. Now have one small Chevy Buick GMC store in cottage country and live on the water. GMCARS1 through 9 were taken on eBay, so I ended up using '10'.
Just use it when a nick name is needed. :convertib: :canada:
