Finally found a source for these;

They offer SST end fittings, now if we could find a source for SST brackets.
BTW, these are about $35.00 each.

Hi Guys,
This hardware looks quite nice, alot like on the new Donzi's for the hatch lifters? (Actually I confess I've never seen a new Donzi except on the pics on this site... not too many up here in NY's finger lakes, but ideal lakes for Donzi's nonetheless).

So for those of us not quite so imaginative, what combination of brackets and struts would one ideally use to retrofit an old hatch (only a metal stick to hold the hatch open, and hands to lift it) to have these gas shocks lift it, and hold it up.

My boat is a 83 22' classic, so the hatch doesn't have little pads into which I could screw the bases of these brackets. The hatch opening doesn't have nice places to attach the other brackets either... What have you all done?

Thanks, Don Banfield (Cayuga Lake)

Hi Don;
The truth is, I'm about a month away from THAT project, but I was glad to find the hardware. The one I was thinking of using this one http://www.thomasregister.com/olc/SmartCat.aspx?az=72827629&type=list&ptno=SPD-GSSX-5300-40+SPD-GSSX-5300-60&template=http://www.spdhardware.com/gstemp.htm&header=Click+on+PRODUCT+NUMBER+below+for+photo+and +specifications+-+Click+on+ADD+TO+CART+to+order
Two of these would give 100# of force. I was talking to MOP this morning, and I mentioned it might be a good idea to add a cable lanyard as a safety device (one of the damaged parts on my Minx was an engine hatch that had blown over on the aft lifting ring) .
So as soon as I can start on this part of the restoration, I'll post pictures.

I just completed this project, glassed in little pads to the cover, I found 20psi struts to work real well, holds the cover up, and retracts with just a little push. I'll post pics if anyone cares.

So Surfer, are these SST brackets and cylinders, are they painted?

The mounts are anodized, not sure about the piston, both from West Marine.

Anyone know what comressed size Gas springs to hold up the hatch on a 92 Classic 22? 11" retracted x 17" extended (is this the right size?) also the lb rating? 90 lb?

thanks for any help, new to this site

Don't overdo it.
I think on the Minx, I used some 25 # springs.
If you go too strong, you flex the hatch every time you pull it down.
Actually, you don't even need SST assemblies. Most of the automotive springs are powdercoated and seem to have SST rods. So if you go too strong, it's not expensive to change them.
Jamie at Lakeside can get the Donzi hardware for you.
