The Machine shop called Friday and said that the engines will be finished this week.

He asked what color I wanted to paint the engines. I want to paint them Mercruiser HI-PO Blue. My dealer buddy called and got the Mercruiser HI-PO Blue spray paint. The retail price per can is $22. I will be getting it for dealer cost which is still $17 dollars a can! OUCH!!!

I need 2 thermostat housings. I also need 2 crossovers to eliminate my recirculating pumps. I am plumbing these badboys with braided stainless line and could use anyof the odds and end to do this. Anyone got anything like this laying around in your garage? If So let me know.

I stopped by the Machine shop and shot a photo of some pieces of my engine. (I Know this looks dumb, but I have no kids to take pix of and the dog won' t hold still).

On a final note, it kinda gets the pride flowing when the Machinist says that he has to borrow a ring compressor because he did not have one big enough for my pistons.

Nice engine... looks all shiny and new....... as for the no-kids part. I got a 5yo boy and still have many pics of my other two "hobbies" O-Scale trains and large kites.

I was going to go wild 540's or 575's but with gas what it is I just bored them 30 over. I believe they are 509's now. I limitted myself to a hotter cam and some head work.

Sounds great! If you haven't done so already, Innovation marine sells the "Merc. blue" paint also. I think it's cheaper than $17 a can....

HM, 10-1 with steel heads, unless you run low timing and premium fuel, might be a tad ambitious... i'm not sure what your total cylinder volume is, but i'd shoot for the 9.2-9.5 number tops on premium, or 8.8-9.0 on 87.

I run 10:1 on 93 with my fingers crossed.

I agree with Jim, I would keep the timing down a tad for comfort sake, aluminum heads are more tolerant and will take higher timing.
You and I have talked about what is now facing you, I am sure it will go full circle and things will be good again.
But you need some extra stuff to keep your mind off things, a little wrench spinning always works.

So here is one of the things I do on all new GM new installs!

Something often over looked is starter engagement on GM's, but a very good thing to check. After installing flywheels but before mounting the bell housings is to mount the starters and do a simple check. Prior to mounting remove the little screw in the tab between the solenoid and the starter body that supplies voltage to the motor bend it away from the solenoid just slightly, . This is done so the starter can be electrically actuated with out turning the engine. You will be checking for proper pinion engagement, the pinion should engage and disengage freely. If there is any binding what soever you will need to shim it, shims are available at any Chevy dealer. To find the right shim thickness loosen the starter and slide a feeler gauge between it and the block .003 to .006-7 usually works and re tighten and check again until it works freely (it is good to rotate engine a little between checks), the shims come in various thicknesses at the dealer. When done brush a little Moly on the ring gear teeth and put the bell housings on. ?? PM me!

Gee guys nice timing AFTER the egines are done.

My plans are to dyno the engines and break them in before they ever hit the engine compartment.

Jim Guidry also provided a link to this site that also sells a clone paint.

These copies are only a few bucks less a can than the original so I chose the original.
