Has anyone put a 454 ,496 or 502 in a 22 zx is it worth replacing the 350 mag with a big block or is their a safety factor involved with the 22zx which prevents the factory from installing larger motors in this type boat. Jeff

My 1997 22zx came with an under powered 454 carb engine with a Bravo 1. (7.4L)

I've read past treads that had an explanation of cost of construction and competition with it’s 26zx in cost. This is probably why they stopped the Big Blocks in the little ZX.

If you are wanting to change for more speed, add a Procharger. I have had a great experience with that set up, 72 mph gps. from a 53-55 mph.

Now I’m trying to get the hull more stable. She’s awful loose!:rlol:

Donzi used to produce 22 ZXs with 454 Mags and 502 Mags but quit somewhere along the way. If you have an Alpha on your 22 ZX, you may want to consider an upgrade to a Bravo along with a power upgrade.

My '99 22ZX came with a 454 (7.4L MPI, bravo 1) and from what I've heard is the last year that this engine was offered in the 22. I also heard it had to do with too many spinouts with the weight/power combination. I'm still not going as fast as I'd like (low-mid 60's on GPS) but have been advised that the length and step on the 22 make you run out of hull quickly at higher speeds.

My '99 had a 502 Mag. She would run around 80mph with a labbed prop and K&N Filter, straight thru-hull w/ no baffles.

At 80 she had to be a hand full. I have a none step hull. I pick that hull because of the treads I had read on spin outs.

Did you ever shorten the drive or change the trim tabs?

Before I put the better engine in I need to get it more stable.

The stepped hulls are stable to upper 70's. The 350 mag is a good candidate for a procharger also a friend of mine has one and it is within 2 mph of my 454mpi w/ procharger.
