Looks like fun, a few of questions though. (1) Are you not painting the cockpit at the same time? and removing the grey carpet?. And (2) where are the engine vents other than the expell on the transom? (the louvered plate) none on the deck ever? (3) I don't think that light on the deck/transom is supposed to be there, are you leaving it there?

Looks great though. Nice colour. :)

I am painting the cockpit at the same time-will post pics after this weekend of the painted product. Carpet is out but will be replaced with new. Louvered plate will be back after paint.
I also have a vent below the back seat in cockpit near floor.
None on deck ever. The light is original equipment & looks normal with louvered vent.

Looks like things are coming together nicely, are you going with the same color? I did notice the antique Teleflex Safety head and the cable color, they are both older than a few members no joke. Try to get your hands on a Teleflex Big T head and a new cable well worth swapping out now while its super easy.

Did you find a hull #? The lack of vents, and placement of the stern light make this an early 16. Did it originally have an Eaton drive ?
Here is a pic of mine, uh I mean Diana's 16

I think the lefty helm is a give away that had a different setup early on, did they use any Volvos then or all Eatons.

Just checked your photo Cliff what a transformation compared to when I saw it last year, looks excellent. I know Diana has to be very tickled with it.

Originally had the Eaton outdrive. I was not familiar with Volvo's in 1985 when I did the conversion to a Mercruser which has worked flawlessly since then. I never found a hull number upon inspection.
MOP, where would I locate a teleflex as you suggested. I agree it's old but I took it apart and cleaned then greased it up.

What I would do if you are not going to run much power is to put the wheel on it and see just how much play it has from cable tip to helm. Its not a bad unit just a light weight! A Big T can be gotten from anyone who stocks Teleflex products.

MOP,
I am running a stock 302 and the steering has served me well. I did go online and see the Big T you mentioned. If you believe I would be safer with the upgrade I may seriously consider.

Reguards!

the hull number on mine was up by the backing block for the bow eye also written across the dash but was hard to read since and after market speedo was added
should run pretty good with that setup
Diana's boat runs real well, trim makes a big difference,
nice work keep the pics coming

Original equipment was an Eaton but I had too many problems and wanted trim, hence the Mercruser.

Sweet 66,
I have a 66 16' also. I did the Merc conversion back in 1982. I know what you mean about getting rid of the Eaton plus the advantage of having power trim. I did a few mods to the original Eaton/Ford setup at first, but then I would snap shear-pins like crazy. I was fabricating the pins from grade 8 bolts and still snapping them. When I went to the Merc conversion I started with SB 350 Chevy but then went to a 406 SB. The thing would scream up to the mid 70's, and as squirrily as can be if I was in anything less than perfect water. At first I continued to use the manual steering but eventually went to power steering. The torque feedback was horendous with the 406. I could see the steering helm flexing under full throttle. Someone like my wife physically, would not have been strong enough to hold the wheel at top speed. The power steering took care of that problem though. Good luck with the remainder of your project.

WOW!
Yours is nice! What year. I see a few differences between the 2 .
Mine only has engine vents in the cockpit below where the backseat coushine snap in. My rear light is in the middle of the back aluminum vent and I have no windschield.

What year is yours? Engine.

Mine is a '67...Freshened up (300hp?) 302 Ford, Volvo AQ200b, and a brand new gas tank! If my outdrive will ever die I'd like to put on a 290DP and snap some heads with holeshots!
Here's another pic, and here are my registry shots:

Nice pics. Is your hull painted? If so with what and how is it holding up? Are you running in salt water?
