OK what's the difference between the Volvo 270 and 280?

Seems to me the 270 was for bigblocks, and the 280 for small blocks?

OK .. here's my .02

The 280 superseded the 270 .
You can tell the difference even without the shift cover
number designation as the 280 has through the anti-ventilation plate exhaust .. not the seperate exhaust 'tab' that the 270 has .

Neither was specifically made for v8's bigblock or small .
as Volvo did'nt make a V8 untill the 290 Drive (I believe)
It was American marine manufacturers (and notably Don himself) who started buying them in droves and putting them on American V8 marine engines as Merc had nothing suitable..

Now I stand correcting ... :biggrin.:

The lower unit is the biggest difference, especially in the area of the cavitation plate. Also, each model change incorporated small upgrades in different areas to increase reliability. The 250 through 270 were almost all the same. The 290 has the most upgrades and overall redesign.

Also, the 280T drive was available from Volvo with a 280HP rated 350 Chevrolet.

Yeah I know I am now running black but boy did the statement below hold true and Don figured it out real early wanting to turn out a reliable package.
