I took the boat out for the first time since new head gaskets. I never got above 3000 RPMs and the water temp was about 160 degrees. But the oil temp almost went off the dial. I shut that motor down and returned to the ramp on one engine. What would cause the oil temp to be high but not the water? Oil preasure was fine, and no water in the oil

Sounds strange but just to see, try swapping the leads to the temp gauges and see if it could be a coincidental gauge problem.

Then again, could the wrong gasket block an oil passage and cause a lack of circulation in the vincinity of the temp sending unit? Therefore a higher temp localized to the sending unit.

Was the gauge working BEFORE the head gasket replacement?

Your oil temperture could easily reach readings of 225/240F. Mine does.

Thanks to all. I found out what the problem was. When I reinstalled the distributor the machanical advance weights became hung up. No advance and retarded the timing and made the engine run very hot. After I fixed that all is well.

Thanks again.
