22 Zx, What Is The Oil Pressure That I Can Expect With A 7.4 Mpi B B 330 Hp. What Type Of Oil And What Weight Should I Use. What Filter. I'm Running About 20 Psi And Think The Oil May Be The Wrong Weight. I Don't Have A Mercruiser Owners Book. Thanks, richard

I run Royal Purple 15-40 in mine. I used to run a HD 30 straight weight and have also run Merc oil which, IIRC, is 20-40.

You are in a hot climate and the engine works all the time, not loafing like an automobile; so, use a good straight SAE40 oil. I've used Havoline, Castrol, Mobile, Quaker State, Pennzoil, though many people have preferences, any good name brand oil will do just fine. The 454 should be 40 to 60 psi.

I use to run Vavoline Racing oil 40, On idle you should have 20
psi but you should be between 40 and 60psi throttle down

Does the same apply to the GT's 454 bored to 468?

CUDA, I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY HOURS IT HAS . IT DID NOT HAVE A HOUR METER ON IT, INSTALLED ONE IN MARCH. THANKS, GUYS I REMOVED THE OIL PRESSURE SENDER TODAY, CHECKED THE GAUGE BY SHORTING THE SUPPLY WIRE, GAUGE WORKS. GOING TO CHECK PRESSURE WITH A MECHANICAL GAUGE TOMORROW. IF THE INDICATOR IS OK. I'M GOING TO PUMP THE OIL OUT CHANGE THE FILTER THAN REPLACE THE OIL WITH WHAT YOU GUYS RECOMMEND. THE ENGINE IS TO CLEAN FOR IT TO HAVE ANY MAJOR PROBLEMS,BUT EVERYONE KNOWS HOW THAT IS. THANKS ,RICHARD:eek: .

Check the pressure switch sendor, If everything checks good after you do a manual pressure check and that comes up ok. I would change the sendor out

Thanks everyone, I think we solved the problem.Manual pressure check was 30psi at 1000 rpm 41psi at 1500 rpm. Pressure did not increase with the sender and would not go above 20 psi. Must be a bad sender. Are there different range senders are they all the same. Does anyone use Fram hP4 racing oil filters. Has anyone had a problem with them. Found out there are different rangers Auto senders are 60 psi. most boats use 80 psi . Boater's World has the 80 psi. The 7.4 uses the fram PH 30 on the remote bracket. The Fram HP4 is a little longer but the same dia. it allows more flow. I need to know if using the hp4 would be advantageous due to the fact it cost 3X's more.
