I know this has been covered, but I searched for a long time last night and I can't seem to find any of the older threads.

So, I'm wondering what I should run in my Volvo 280? I know the manual and the local boat mechanic both say Motor Oil, but I'm curious what you all run.

Any help is appreciated...

Thanks!!

I ran synthetic 10W-40 in my old Volvo 280. My old manual recommended 10W-40 motor oil.

I may be a bit foggy because I've taken about 6 cold pills today, but I seem to recall people using motor oil, as per the manual....most suggested straight 30 wt.

Forget using any kind of motor oil, synthetic or not, in your 250, 270, 280 or 290 for high performance use. You should run real GL-4 or GL-5 gear lube. Motor oil IS NOT suitable for the shearing forces found high-load gear applications. I ran Redline MT-90 gear oil in my 280Ts which is specificlly suitable for cone clutches. The result was much smoother shifting than with motor oil as well as a cooler running drive. The only down side to using the Redline MT-90 was that it cost $8 a quart.

Here Here on the synthetics, there is just to much proof out there for anyone to run anything else. Being an old fool I will have over 5k in the 383, it will break in on decent Petro oil then go to synthetic once the rings are set. I will drain the BH drive and RedLine it as per Mario's instructions! Using regular oil is like going back to burning Naptha! So an oil change cost $50 bucks damn cheap insurance.

well, im running lucas synthetic 75w-90w his year. I tested this oil n my race quad and usually after 3 8 hour sessions the oil is black(i use to run 30wt). i checked my oil after 3 8 hour sessions after switching to the lucas and it still looked new. and my shifting and clutch feel were hands down better. I know its a race quad and not a outdrive which takes much higher shearing forces but after seeing the oil after my reg oil change i was amazed, and i didnt change the oil just made sure it was topped off. I hear drag racers rant on about lucas products. so in short yea, im using lucas synthetic gear oil 75w-90
