Changing oil in "new-used" Volvo 280 drive yesterday.

Is the bottom hole (where you fill from) suppose to have a bolt or a screw?

My older 250 drive had a screw (on the side of the drive) and a flat, hard red washer.

This 280 has a bolt (on the front of the drive) and a rubber washer. Seems a little funny.

The bolt head accepts a 14mm socket but the exterior of the socket is very snug in the hole. It fits, but just barely.

Just seemed like maybe this wasn't the original set up.

Appreciate any help.

I think that actually may be a blob of bubble gum, now that I'm looking at it!

Should be a screw, a bolt in the water stream is bad news and will cause cavitation burn on the prop. And yes fill it from the bottom, don't go above the full mark all drives have to have an air at the top to allow for expansion unless equipped with a reservoir.

Thanks Phil - I knew where you filled from, I was just asking if it was suppose to be a bolt or a screw.

What you say makes sense, and I was about to just figure someone stuck a bolt in there instead of a screw BUT then I saw, in my SELOC manual's diagram, what actually does look like a bolt (you can see the head pretty well) in the 280's oil filler hole and then in the 250 (or 270) diagram, the head looks smooth (like a screw).

This bolt's head isn't up out of the hole so as to be able to cause a cavitation burn situation, but is recessed in the hole when installed.

Still wondering -- bolt or screw?

I think the SELOC manual even calls it a bolt and an O-ring for the 280 / 290 diagram.

Craig, my 270, my other 270, and my 280 have the large slotted screwdriver plug thingy...:)

Maybe give these guys a call.

Thanks for the input guys.

Maybe I could just put my old 250's slotted screw plug in the 280 where that pesky bolt is. Have to check the thread size.

Craig pulled the parts book, Plug # 852904-2 the seal ring is -1, the plugs are the same throughout all series drives from 100 to current.
