I need to know if the a 2001 Mercruiser 6.2 MX is internal or externally ballanced.

The issue is I need to swap the flywheel that came on the 6.2 with a smaller one and I need to know what impact that may have on the motor.

Please help!!

Brad, did it come factory with fresh water cooling. They do here. I know. Off topic. but only a 10-15HP spread or so to the Scorpian.

Is this for you? and what about the rebuild and new power you had last year? (if this is for you) :D

From what info I have been able to gather, internally balanced forged crank on the 6.2L.

Can't you tell by looking at the flywheel? I know you can on my 350.

Why do you NEED to change the flywheel? :wrench:

bellhousing interference or don't you want to buy a new starter?

see if the flywheel has any approx inch diameter holes drilled into it... those are for balancing...

So every engine supplier I have called this morning says all GM SBC are internally balanced. The only exception and honestly I don't hold much stock in it because these guys didn't sound like they knew anything was of all people Mercruiser Support. They didn't even know some of the basic things I was asking.

Anyways... I eagerly await further input and thoughts from people.

To paint a clearer picture... I am trying to mate a 6.2 MX to a Volvo bellhousing with a 280T behind it. The Merc flywheel won't work so I need to go to a different one. I have what I need, flywheel and starter for it to work. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't jeopardizing anything.

according to gm all there motors are externaly balanced im sure merc doesnt rebalance them internaly check the specs from this site.

gm marine engine page (http://www.gm.com/automotive/gmpowertrain/engines/vortec/apps/marine/)

if you click on each engine it will give you its specs. i know the 6.2 is a 350 that mercury strokes but i would think they wouldn't go to the trouble of changing the balancing method. the question i have is when you buy a longblock from mercruier i dont think it comes with the flywheel or harmonic balancer so how does this work. now i am even more confused.

According to Mercury they get all their engines from GM as starndard engines and then marinize them. Again, this is according to the guy I talked to. So this mercruisers are not the same as GM Marine engines on that web page.
