I picked up an Alpha SS over the winter and with some help from Jamie Root(thanks again James) it is on. I ran the boat for the first time today in an effort to get a feel for the new drive. All in all there wasn't to much difference from the Gen II other than the speed and little more vibration at slower speeds. I have some more testing to do in the morniing but here are the results so far. Just for the record my Gen II bench mark was 64 mph at 4900 rpm.

Test one : 23" Mirage Plus 72.8 mph @ 5,250 rpm.

Test two: 22" Turbo 70.6 mph @ 5400 rpm.

Test three: 22" Quad 70.5 @ 2,250 rpm.

Test Four: 23" Cleaver TBD

One thing that I can't figure out is that I still get some chine walking at WOT. Based on what other SS owners have said I should have little to no walking...................Hmmmmmm ?

I'll post the resluts of test 3 & 4 tomarrow.

Thanx for taking the time of sharing your results.I too am bolting on an SS for the 1st time.It seems your gains are damn impressive so far.I also have some prop. testing when the time arrives of two different Cleavers and a Turbo. This will be on a 22C though.

Cuda, I ran the Turbo it seemed to give me the best performance.

Sam, get a 25 cleaver...

Buizilla, I'll see what happens with the 23 cleaver first. On my Gen II the cleaver had a lot of slip so this test should be interesting. Do you find that you have to use less trim with your SS vs your stock unit.

DAMN! i was off by 1 mph... what did i say 72? i am surprised i didn't get a phone call today as i was polishing my life away...

you might need more pitch on that turbo to get speed out of it... you camshaft is making peak hp in the 5400 range and might just be petering out.

i cannot comment on the 3 blades, i have NEVER run one on the SS. i find i enjoy the 4 blades much more. going to dougs 25 quad IV O/T you should see 9% slip and probably 4800 - 4900 give or take... a 25 cleaver should run around 5200 on your boat but keep an eye on the slip numbers... they'll go up so you'll lose in the mid range but she'll he fast and stable on top. they like to run about 14 - 16% slip from what i've found... the O/T will be lovely for mid range cruise... i bolted the new 27 O/T on tonight... in hope of getting my rpm back down to 54 - 5500.

even with a 4 blade if i let the boat just go it'll get a chinewalk.. especially in a cross chop. but it is pretty easy to hold on to... at 68 mph with the gen II i could barely hang onto the boat with a cleaver... at 77+ with the 25 O/T you have now and the SS i just had to be paying attention... the 25 quad IV (full blown) acts about the same at the O/T cept the O/T is gonna give you more bow lift... on that 77+ run with the O/T the lake was a bit choppy from the wind that day...

in a week or two i'll let you know how the hydraulic steering effects stability :) if the cylinder EVER arrives that is...

sweet deal... no shifting issues i assume... i think i found my gremlins... and squashed their asses :)

BTW... were you running the same direction in the river for all of these tests??? with or against the current? drifting i clocked about 2 mph last year on the gps...

Sam, What HP are you running in your 16? Great numbers!! I put an SS on our 18', but I don't have the hp to make it work, "this year". See you all at the AOTH.

Jerry,

Sam should be about equal to a 6.2 MX... 320 at the prop roughly...

seem sthe 16 really likes the SS... i picked up around 8 mph right out of the box too...

Buizilla had some great results on his 18 with a 350 mag (270 hp)... i think he managed something like 66 or so mph with a 23 mirage???

65.5 with a 23 cleaver on my 18. It was all over the bay with the Mirage Plus, beat the hell out of me. and the boat, and it vibrated from the round ear blade of the M plus. Absolutely flat ride and rock solid straight with the cleaver on the SS. Sam will need at least a 24 cleaver.

Test update : I ran the 22" Quad Four ( Thanks Doug ! ) today with decent results. I didn't have much seat time due to high winds but I did manage to make a pass @ 70.5 mph @5,250 rpm. The quad for gave me a flater ride with less chine walk.

For those of you running cleavers what does your rear thrust washer look like. The one I have is to thick and will not allow me to get the front tab washer on.

There are several sizes of thrust washers. I know my cleavers require a thick one.
