View Full Version : Merc HP motors
Looking for a few ideas of what I looked at today, was on a scrounge tour in one of the places there was a BB Merc with a high rise manifold, gold roller rockers, regular cast iron exhaust. My Bud thought it was over 500, any input.

The 500EFI motors come with Crane gold roller rockers. I'd assume the older carburated HP500's also had Crane rockers. Maybe you saw an older HP500 or Bulldog.
No clue what I was looking at, it had the valve cover off so I could see the rockers, nice finned heavy alum V covers and the tall manifold. Next time out I will try to get some numbers.

You can easily tell an HP engine, as they are BLUE!!
The intake, carb, pulleys, and power steering pump are all blue.
The HP500 carb engines came with Gil exhaust, black manifold with large polished stainless tailpipes. The 500EFI's come with CMI headers.
Take care,
Kent
It could be a Merc 454/420. They were Merc's stock hot engines before the advent of the 500Hp's. I have two in my Formula.
