Which Prop do you feel is best suited for a 22' Classic? Also what are advantages and disadvanges to a smaller/larger diameter?

Turbo 1 14-1/4" diameter
Turbo vector 14-1/2" diameter
Mirage Plus 14-5/8" diameter

I see a lot of talk about th Turbo 1, but none about the Turbo Vector. The
vector pitch and diameter is closer to the Mirage Plus which I currently run.
I am looking to get a little more performance out of my boat. Currently I have a Mirage Plus 25 and am only pulling about 44000-4500 rpms. I think the WOT is 4600-4900. Last season I tried a Mirage Plus 23 and was bouncing off the rev limiter. I do not want to get into labbing a prop and Turbo has lots of choices as far as pitches and diameters.

1997 Classic 22
454 Mag (385 hp)
Bravo 1 1.5 to 1 gear

Thanks for any and all advise.

Jim - see my related post on identifying a Turbo (http://www.donzi.net/forums/showthread.php?t=34026). Is Turbo just a generic / shorthand moniker for Turbo I or are these 2 distinct props?

I am running a 25 Mirage Plus and will try this other prop - I just wonder what it is?

They are two distinct props. The Turbo Oan and Turbo Vector are both manufactured by Precision Propellers. I tried both the Turbo One and the Vector on my 18 last year at AOTH III. The Vector was an OK prop, but the Turbo One had just as much top end and was not quite as loose as the Vector. This doesn't help you too much as your application is a 22 and I tested the prop on an 18. I think you will fing that the urbo One is the most popular with the 22 Classic guys as several are running it with nice results. Good luck.

These are the numbers I have so far - Note that this is NOT WOT

1998 Classic 22
502 Mag (415 hp)
Bravo 1 1.5 to 1 gear
Mirage Plus 25"
Driver only
Heavy load of fuel

3000 RPM - 39.5 GPS
3500 RPM - 47.5 GPS (this was with 2 additional passengers)
4000 RPM - 58 GPS
4500 RPM - 65 GPS

Need to try the Turbo

Gentlemen,

I have a 22 Classic with the 454 MAG Carb edition and a 1.36:1 Bravo 1 behind it. Due to the drive gear, I can only run a 22" pitch on this stock engine. Let me just state that the Turbo 1 was the best addition to my Classic for the money so far. My boat gained over 3 mph by switching to the Turbo 1 and most of all in my case, the prop settled my boat down making it a joy to drive.

Some of you have mentioned chine walking at higher speeds. Reducing the diameter of the prop really helps this aspect because what tends to happen with the larger diameter props is a paddle wheel effect as the prop and drive is trimmed out. This also helps start the chine walking.

Reddog, your turning 4500 rpms at 65 mph. Even with a couple people on board with you I believe the Turbo 1's smaller diameter should help you yet still keep the Rs under 5000. I believe you could run a 25" maybe a 26" Turbo 1 and be right where you want your engine to be when your running her by yourself and a half tank of fuel. I'd also expect you to see 70 maybe more mph when running the boat by yourself.

This prop was recommended to me by other board members who have tried everything made on the 22 hull. All I can say, is I was very pleased with the results on my Classic. See if someone has a Turbo 1 prop they'll let you borrow or wait to buy and try one at AOTH IV.

Turbo Ones run odd pitches and Turbo Vectors run even pitches. Have to monkey with it to get a 26" Turbo 1, it comes as a 25" or 27". There is a 26" Vector however. Maybe they would build one special order. Check out http://www.donzi.net/forums/showthread.php?t=27387 for more prop talk on a 22.

Turbo Ones run odd pitches ...

The Turbo web site http://www.turbo-props.com/TURBO1.html lists both odd and even pitches for both the Turbo 1 (13, 15, 17, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, and then 27) and Vector (21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26)

RedDog beat me to it, but yes, both odd and even on the props. Ordered a 23" Turbo 1 first when I was working on mine. When I found it was to much pitch still, for the cost of shipping, returned the 23 and got a 22.

JH, It appears that the 25" Mirage Plus is about 1" pitch to much in that prop. Especially since you say the 23" MP was bouncing off your rev limiter. Usually, for every 1" of pitch decreased, you gain 200 RPMs. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Same thing happens if you decrease the diameter of a prop. 14 5/8 diameter will turn fewer RPMs than a 14 1/4. I would bet that a 25" Turbo 1 would put your engine right where you want her. In about the 4600 to 4700 RPM range. In my example, I also tried a 21" Turbo 1 to bring my RPMs up to the recommended 4900 to 5150 range. With the 22" I'm turning 4700 at WOT, trimmed out. What I found, was even though I turned more RPMs, the speed did not increase. So, as you can see, you've got to try a prop and get a baseline to compare to first and then make adjustments. I returned to the 22" pitch because why run the engine harder than necessary at a slower overall speed.

Let me just add, I have not tried a Mirage Plus on my Classic primarily because of the cost factor. I figure why mess with advice from folks who have tried it all before me. Also, since the question was Turbo 1 vs Turbo Vector. I believe the Turbo folks put a Vector on my boat at AOTH last year. (I'm not sure because they told me it was a test prop) I found the Turbo 1 I already had to be a little faster and a little quieter in the handling department. :)

I had a PAIR of 454 Mag MPI (385 HP) and Bravo 1 drives (1.5 ratio) - the same as your engine/drive - in my Donzi Z3250 Daytona. I ran Mirage Plus 23p (3 bladed) and also used 24p (4 bladed). The stock engines have a recommended max 4500 RPM and that is exactly where they stopped in both cases without rapping on the rev limiter. The four bladded prop experienced a couple MPH faster on the top end, but lower rpm/mph in the middle, better for cruising and fuel mileage. Nice torquey middle for a 12,000 lb boat. 60 MPH max.
