Anyone know how much oil the 500EFI holds and what weight Merc reccomends? Anyone running synthetic in a 500?

Rick,
yes I was running nothing but Mobil 1 and changed it every 10 hours.

Also used the Fram HP-4 filter

Thanks Ted. What weight did you run?

0W-30
5W-30
10W-30
15W-50
Racing 0W-30

15W-50, but I did have an oil temp guage and was sure to let the oil warm up
and never ran it hard till it warmed up. It took about 15-20 mins. run time.

The oil temp would usually run about 200 deg. at cruise and about 230-240 at full throttle for a sustained period.

Thanks again. That's what I thought since Merc seems to reccomend the heavier weight oils. The SE has a oil temp gauge so I'll warm it up first.

HP600SC,

Do you measure your oil temp in the pan or the oil passage?

Rick,

Official capacity is 7 quarts including the filter which is about a quart.

I have always run straight 40W, which is what the service manual recomends at over 50 degrees. Reggie Fountain got me started on this program back in 1996 when I bought my first 500 powered boat. If you want to run multi-viscosity, mercury recomends 20-50.

I have been told to NOT run synthetics in the 500. Something about ring failure issues. I'm not sure exactly, but why bother paying the premium for breakdown protection for a motor that never sees really high temps and gets fresh stuff on a very regular basis.

Believe it or not, I find my 500 service manual interesting reading. I would invest in one for giggles.

Sorry Ted, but you know the whole opinions thing.

Todd,
Thanks for the info. I ran Valvoline Racing 40W in the 18 from day 1. Seems like a heavy weight to run in a motor but it is what they reccomend.
