I dont know what it is but it sure is NOT Mercury. Looks to have Bondo and filler in it.

this isn't one of those things one of those guys over on the nazi boating site were hacking and welding together is it? you know ... shortening a stock gearcase? i think i saw an article back when i could view photos...
