I am wondering if this boat with the 496mag (375 hp)is underpowered-Is the 496magHO or the 500 efi a better choice?Does anyone have any experiance on this boat with the 496?
Thanks

Although these boats can be powered with a single big block, twin SBC's are way more common in the 28's. I would venture a guess that a 496 375hp would be underpowered. A 500efi might be more like it, but again, IMO twins would be preferred..

I have a 2002 28ZXO with a single 496 MAG HO. The boat is completely stock and will run 60-62 mph with 3 people. It is a bit slow out of the hole, but is by no means under powered, IMO. My family and I love the boat.

i have driven one with a 454 mag, the first ZXO they built with a single, and it was pretty doggy. Mid 50's, but slow out of the hole, especially for the 28. Still a damn good looking boat though.

is powered by twin small block 5.7 ltr (260 hp) all stock. The boat is quick out of the hole, very stable and top speed approaches 70mph. A real eye catcher. I talked to several others prior to purchaseing mine new in 2003 all said twin small blocks are the way to go - much easier on the drives, better handling around the dock, faster to plan, etc... plus if one engine fails you can always get home.

Don't just think thats all the power you need. The reality of it is, the 496HO will be working mighty hard all the time to move that heavy of a boat. This will stress the drive and the motor. Go with the twin small blocks, plenty of bang, and better for resale...

We are on a chain of lakes and want to use the boat for pulling wake boarders, tubes etc and also family cruising-We are hearing the twins would not work as well-top speed is not what we are looking for!
your thoughts?
thanks

The twins will work fine pulling tubers. Not too sure about wakeboarding, but then agian if I was serious about those sports I would be looking to get into a Ski Nautique or maybe a Moomba. The boat is really kinda big to do the stuff your talking about. Its a great cruiser, wouldn't be my first choice for skiing or wakeboarding. Smaller boats are usually better. If a 496 is going to have some trouble getting the boat out of the hole, its certainly going to struggle pulling a skier... maybe the HP500 option would be better..

I will add that the 502 26ZX is a pain to pull a tube, and we have a HUGE one. We fall off plane around 18mph GPS, which is a bit fast for the littler kids.
We now enjoy our neighbors 19 Sting Ray for our tubing fun.
