Just a poll to see what's under your hatch and hanging off the back.

6" rod forged rotating assy
9.7:1 compression
Sportsman II heads
Holly 715cfm carb
Edlebrock Performer RPM intake
Crane Hydraulic flat tappet cam
Virtual Dyno lists 438hp/498lbs torque @5300rpm.
I could easily pump it up to 500hp with roller cam, dry exhaust and running up the rpms, but then I'd have to change the speedometer out again.

That woody is just awesome!! There is few things prettier in the boating world than a nice old wooden boat.

I land in that "just shy of the next category" with 300 hp in a 350 Mag., which I used to think was a decent, but slightly tame motor... that is until I got into an 18' boat with a low freeboard and one in the bilge, a whole different school of thought now!

Yes Geo, think I have it the way I have always wanted it now. Not too much to take it out of the family ski boat catagory, but plenty to leave skid marks on the passenger seats when needed (drivers seat is not excluded).

What do people think would be the perfect engine for a 22' Classic?

My thoughts are a 383 small block tweaked to produce about 400-450hp thru a Bravo drive with a Imco shortie. Good power and torque yet light and small.

I ran into a guy last weekend, and we ran together all day..

get this.. new bone stock 6.2 small block, Bravo w/ a shorty on a newer 22, so-so prop

66+ on GPS, I clocked it, dead even with my 454 Criterion. If I had a choice, this is the ticket. Put a Whipple on a 6.2, it'll hit 80 on pump gas in a 22, mark my words on this.

I like your thinking, my never ending long project is pointed that way. A 383, a Blachawk drive at standard X (I guess you could call it a B-3 shortie). It is built for torque Rootsy did a desk top dyno on it, it should make about 430 ft of tourque and about 375 HP. It has the internals to handle more HP, full Lunati Pro Mod 6" rod stroker kit and pistons, a Comp 510 lift roller cam, crane roller rockers, Dart heads, 750 Holley, Gil headers. Got more in the motor than in the boat and trailer. I am not shooting for top speed just a good cruise of 45 at 32-3500. I am hoping my experiment works out, if not I will find a winter place to try something else.

Jim what is the 6.2 rated at HP & torque wise, maybe I'll get into the upper 60's.

Just a word of caution to people who have not really built boat engines before and are just using PC dyno's to calculate HP. Once you start planning on more than 1 hp per CI you have to be very careful as to what the torque curve below 5K looks like. Think seriously about the rpm range where you do most of your boating, and the rpm's you will use to keep your drive intact. There is a reason why BIG engines and superchargers are popular for boats.

How about through a Volvo DP?

I am ready to install a 383 + 0.040 (385) with full roller valve train,
forged / balanced roatating assy, AFR heads, and GIL offshore wet
AFR has the package at 491 HP at 5500 @ 9.5:1cr

if it dont blow up i'll check off the "400+ volvo" option in the survey

Low and mid end torque seems to be the marine necessity that is often not discussed. Top hp alone means little in boating. You can build big hp but the boat may not plane off or not plane off well. You need that flat torque curve with solid numbers going far back as well as big hp for top end. That seems to come from the larger cube motors.

How do you like those Hi Tek manifolds ?
Have you had a chance to run them yet and were you able to do a before and after comparison ?
With limited testing to date (thanks to conditions beyond my control) I picked up about 100RPM on a 502 MAG but Allan claims better improvement on carb'ed engines I believe .

I have had them for 2 seasons. Over all I like them but I do have a couple issues. As for a comparison I am not sure. I rebuilt the motor the same time I got them with a few changes so it could be any of a number of things why I got more power but I am sure they helped. I had to go with HiTek because no other company made them for a Chrysler. After the season is over (a week or two) they have to go back for repairs. They (Hi Tek) has been great about it and will fix them as soon as I get them there.
