I was doing the Ebay dance for props and poked around the Alphas for an ass backward drive which also may have borne fruit. I have a :bonk: head ache from reading all that crap!

Sounds like a pretty good deal with the Buy It Now price of 1800!

Would a SS bolt on a Alpha1? I have 1988 Merc outdrive. What are the advantages of swapping an SS versus a Alpha?

TMDOG, what hull do you have?

I have a 18 classic.

TMDOG, I put an SS on my 18LE with a 23 clever and it became a completely different boat. I'm thrilled with it. Where are the water pickups on the ebay example?? Mine are just above the nose on the very front. It didn't like a round ear prop, at all, but it damm sure came alive with a labbed clever. I think the SS/clever mod was worth 7-8 mph over a stock Alpha and a Mirage + on my boat.

Right now I'm using a Turbo 25. Buizilla, will the SS bolt to the Alpha collar?

Yup, get a standard gasket mount kit, 6 fasteners, heave ho, your done. Use ONLY hi-po Merc oil too. Check your shift linkage carefully after installation. Depending on where the water holes are will govern how you flush the engine. I use a HUGE GOTT cooler to do mine.

Jim,

what kind of slip numbers are you seeing midrange (3500) and at WOT running that cleaver?

the cleaver ran like a raped ape on mine but it had huge slip numbers... now that the blowout ring is gone that may be a different story since the hydromotive O/T slip is now equal to its big brother at 9% across the board.

Standard location for water pickups on the SS is on the top fo the nosecone... if they are different the gearcase has been replaced with an outboard unit. The case is also a bit more beefy than the outboard counterparts...

tmdog,

it's the best bang for the buck on a 16 and 18 classic... for both speed and handling... and yes it is as easy as jim said as far as swapping.. direct replacement for all 84 - 90 alphas.

Rootsy, to be honest, I have never calculated the slip numbers at all. The gain across the board with the SS/clever combo sold me so much, so that to me, the numbers would be irrelevant.

Sam, the prop I got from you is now on the Criterion. It seems to like it there. That is, until I can repossess Poodle's clever that he *thinks* he's going to keep.... NOT.

Good info on the props Jim, as soon as Old Man Winter get's tired of kicking our @#$# I'll need to start testing props again with my "new" SS. I have a 22" Turbo and a 23" Cleaver to start with. Once I get a baseline with those Doug L. is going to let me test his 22" Quad four as well as his 23" Mirage. Between all those I hope to find my go to prop.

Can't believe that is still available, maybe a member can snag it a little cheaper?

That would be me.Thanx for the heads up on this Phil.I am going to give it a try on my 22C with a cleaver. The price was reasonable and hopefully it will be more durable than the standard Alpha.I will now have a spare drive on hand for any failures.
The question is.Has anyone ever tried one on a 22C ? Will it come up on plane without eventually having to go to a sternjack?

Rob has a 22 with it and it runs fine he is very happy with the combo, I was headed that way and maybe should have. But now buried in parts and cold weather, hoping to have it running by the time it gets warm.

Best of luck!
