View Full Version : Basic questions from a new guy

I am new to this site and this is my first post. I have some questions about my 18 2+3 that are pretty basic and probably really stupid! It was my grandfather’s boat and I have been driving it most of my life without knowing the definite answers to many of the questions people have about it. I believe it is a 1968 but I would like to know for sure, it could be 1969. The hull number is C18-258. I am NOT a mechanic and know very little about engines. It has a Holman Moody Ford in it, I’m not sure whether it is a 289 or a 302. How does one figure that out? The outdrive is a Volvo but I do not know which model number. I need to get this question answered because I need to replace the tilt motor. These are just a few of the many questions I have about the boat. I have a few pictures of the boat if anyone is interested in seeing them.

Hi some of the more knowledgable HM people will jump in for sure, you say it was you Grand Dads boat. Was he the original owner? Also I am sure the guys would love to see some pics.

WELCOME JEFF !!!!! :D:D:D

Yes, we want more pictures...

"C" = Chisholm
18= feet
258= about the right number for that year and it is NOT a barrelback

Show us a picture of the drive and the rest will be easy. Trim & Tilt = 280 in most cases, Tilt = 250-270 in most cases (I know, there was a 270T...)

If your Volvo has trim/tilt, I think that would make it a 270/280...

The gel coat is not original, it was re-done about 10 years ago. The boat has been well cared for but went through a period of 6 or so years with very light use. I am getting a new interior for it this year. I need a tachometer for it. I would like to find an old Teleflex to match what was lost. I want to keep the boat as original as I can. If anyone of you guys that replaced your old tachometers have an old one I am interested!

Scott P, what makes that a 250 and NOT a 270? I need to know :)

Jeff, very NICE !!!!

Oh, and Jeff, does that 11-13' Boston Whaler sport have a left hand helm?

Oh, and Jeff, does that 11-13' Boston Whaler sport have a left hand helm?

The Whaler is nothing special, no left hand helm. Hmmmmmm... Now you've got me thinking, Could I switch it? ;)

Jeff,

N I C E Boat !!

Engine is likely a 302, as the 351s came with cast aluminum rocker covers.
This still has the original Autolite carb! WOW!

Was the engine repainted? The blue is so bright and clean . . the intake manifold doesn't show heat marks from the exhaust crossover.

Everything under the hatches looks like my 1969 Corsican, even the hose to from the blower and the wiring layout.

I have a stock Teleflex tach from my boat, worked last summer but was not accurate after I added the Pertronix electronic ignition. At steady speed it would stabilize. I suspect it is fine for a conventional ignition.
Yours for the cost of shipping, and a ride!

Send me you address!

WOW Glad you posted the shots, definitly a very nice boat. it appears to have the old style two wire tilt motor, no trim. Check on ebay for a relacement or have it fixed there is a chance it only needs minor repair like brushes and a cleaning of the comutator. Very glad to hear you will be keeping it original that rates a Big Bravo!

that thar looks like a 289/302 to me... if she is original... and you remove a valve cover... you will see the CID cast into the cylinder head... also if you can look down by the starter at the pad and get the engineering # you can figure out which block you have... anything prior to C8 is a 289...

as far as a 302 vs 351.. the 351 is noticably wider in the intake manifold due to the taller deck height required in order to achieve the stroke. that motor looks like a 302 to my poor eyes...

lastly.. if it has the original intake manifold.. check to see if the firing order is cast into it... 289 /302 firing order is 15426378 (pre roller motor)... the 351 and all late 302 roller motors use a different firing order which unfortunately i don't cannot pull from my memory at this moment..

Root - before the donzi i was a ford guy :rlol:

Lenny,
Look really close at the Donzi's drive. The cone has lift tabs to lock in the prop cone. All 250s have this. The 270 Volvo drive has a set screw ( See Pictures) not tabs.

Jeff- Beautiful boat!!!!!!! You are a very lucky person to have a grandfather that had such great taste and pride in caring for such a rare boat. What I really like is that no one altered it,indeed very rare in this day and age-Best of luck-you've come to the best place in the world for guys and girls who care about their boats. :propeller :rlol: :biggrin.:

She is a beauty!

Scott, I was with Lenny on how you ID'd the 250. Never knew that. But then I thought my old 250 was a 270 for 18 years!!

I do know my "new used" 280 is indeed a 280 cuz I gots me a reel good ed-u-ma-cation raat here on this here web saaaight!!

Don't forget, if it's still visible (by the apparent upkeep, I suspect it is), the serial number should start with 2-5-0 or 2-5-something for a 250, etc. (1st 2 or 3 digits are indiucators).

Thank you all for your very kind comments about the boat. I promise to take very good care of it and I will never sell it!

Mad Poodle, Glad you got to meet Jim C. He is the one who pointed out this site!
Thanks again everyone, I'm learning alot!

Great pic of an unmolested hm 289! I finally took the cover off of my 16' v-drive today. Not spring here yet, temp still in '50s but it won't be long. Back to some questions---it appears to have the original 289 in my boat but somebody put on a Victor Jr. intake and a 750 cfm double pumper (both way overkill for marine). Here is a couple of simple holman moody questions. Were the original intakes cast iron or aluminum? The front timing cover plate is a combo cover plate (engine mount holder, water intake flanges, etc.) that looks like the picture on this ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3586622449&category=2237&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWA%3AIT&rd=1

That said, the cover literally looks like somebody cut it out with a torch rough edges and all. If it didn't look so much like the picture above I would say it was non original. Does it sound original?

And finally, the 289 I have has a tag on the bellhousing saying 225 hp. And it is definately not a 289 hi po as the heads are not hi po. They are just garden variety cast rockers with 289 and 66 (I assume the year) cast into them. Does this seem right?

Cuda
02-16-2004, 07:12 PM
I know the automotive 289's came as 200 hp two barrel and 225 four barrel.

mphatc

rustnrot,

The original intakes were cast iron, 289/302 had the chrome valve covers, rockers are the original cast units.

I recently stripped my original engine, cam is not FoMoCo stock, lots of duration, headgaskets were thinner than what Ford used, these were Felpro . .
I haven't measured the heads but they may be machined for increased compression.

My boat came from Bill S. he never had it apart, I spoke to the original owner, (I'm the 3rd ) he never had it apart.

My boat now runs a 650 Holley, vacuum secondaries . . and ran awesome except for the blow by from tired rings . .

Your front cover, yes torch cut plate steel, they never even removed the hot roll slag on mine! Jabsco circulation pump on four standoffs . . long bolts . .
TIP, If you ever take that apart to service, install an extra alternator belt, tie wrap it out of the way . . cause when one breaks you are sh!t out of
luck!

I have the original Ford intake if you are interested.

wishing it would warm up!!!

I may be interested in the intake. What intake are you running now? I was thinking perhaps an Edelbrock performer.

I am now running the Edelbrock Performer Air gap

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=EDL%2D7521&view=257#largerimage

The one you mentioned is :
http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/edl-2121.jpg

Cost difference is $100.00, but the Air Gap will run alot cooler . . but then again you may not have the space under your engine hatch ???

make me an offer if you want the FoMoCo 4 barrel intake

Nice boat!! FYI, my boat based on your pictures seems identical.
It is also HM powered, all original, and is a 1969 (C18-292). I
am also interested in the difference between the 250 and 270 drives??

hey scott,

thanks for the kind words.....it was great to run into you at the miami boat show..... instead of bringing the whaler down i need to drag one of the donzi's down next time. actually, i need to bring jeff and royce (the two other iowa guys with donzi's ) down and join in on the run to the keys. speaking of jeff......his grandmother once told me the story of how they were on their way back from the miami boat show in the late 60's and when they got to orlando she said to jeff's grandfather......."if you want that yellow donzi let's turn around and go back and get it!" what a great story....i always think of that when i see the boat! on a serious note, the time is here that i need to split the hull on my '69 2+3 and replace the gas tank...... any good advice?

jpc

Jeff,

Ooops, forgot my manners... Welcome to the board!!

Met your buddy Jim C. @ the boat show yesterday. You need to come with him next year and bring the boat too!! Him and John (I believe that was his name, sorry I am terrible with names :( ) spoke very highly of your boat, said it is a beautiful piece of history.

Bring it to an Event, show it off a bit, and enjoy the company of good folks and geat Donzi's!!
