Are they necessary? I'm pretty sure I don't have one on my 20 Formula with an SBC. I got one with the Minx, but it sure looks like a plumbing nightmare. Does everyone use them?

Hi Cuda!
On the Minx, the 'cooler is for the power steering system. Normally on inboard boats they are for the transmission, and they're definately reccomended. In the case of transmissions, it's kind of like the drive shower discussions.

i would install one if your oil temp gets above 240 degrees. they make 5", 9" and 12", but if your oil doesn't get hot, don't worry about it.

rick runs one on the 22. i have a tranny cooler (5") and an engine oil cooler (12") on all three inboards.

I feel that on any High Performance engine a Oil Temperature Gauge should be installed.

Since you boat in very warm water, after you install the gauge I think you'll decide to install the oil cooler.
