Were the stripes on early (mine's a 1970) Donzis gel or paint? On my boat the stripes were obviously repainted, and poorly. I'm thinking of stripping the paint off, and am wondering what I'm going to see under it...

Jim, Just am finishing up the deck and cockpit resto. on my original 1969 16. The stripes were definetly gelcoat.

Gel-coat. In the mold, they sprayed the major colour first on the deck with the stripe area masked off so no gel went there. Then they quickly remove the paper in that 7" area and hit it with the white or black stripe (whatever). That colour will be on top, (in the mold) of the major deck colour and oversprayed at the stripe to deck transition as it doesn't matter. This is probably a long ways in so in reality, you should not have a problem. Just something to think about. The thickness of any of this gel will be about 20-23 mils. It will be thicker in the areas adjacent to the left and right sides of the stripe.
