I was thinking of all the repowers and outdrive upgrades we did this past year.
Let's post our Boat Model, Modifications, Engine, Prop, Outdrive, Performance, Controllability/Driveability. Maybe someone could make a spread sheet of our rides. This may help others to set up their boats.

How about the Speedy little 16 with the Alpha SS. Or the 22ZX with a Supercharged 454. The Big Block 18 with the OMC. 18's with Alpha SS. Radical Cammed 388 GT. Big block supercharged in Georgia. 18 with 5.7 MPI 300hp BlackHawk, and all the other Donzi's. GEOO

Wait!!!
We might want to put this in it's own little spot. This thread will be lost in the massive archives we have been accumulating.
MP is right, make a spread sheet, have everyone fill it out and post on a separate page for ready viewing.
This will be cool!

Scott,

I was all ready to post the results from the second shakedown run I made Friday of my X-18, but the dang MerTrans II TRS started to slip after about an a half hour use. We saw 55 MPH on the GPS while the RPMs were still climbing before the the transmission let loose. After reading my Mercruiser repair book, it looks like I'm not getting enough oil pressure to the clutch pack probably from me damaging a teflon seal when I put it all back together. You know, I can't stand these transmissions since parts are rare, and what parts are still available, Mercury bends you over big time for them. I haven't decide what I going to do yet, but I haven't ruled out sending the transmission out to someone who has more experience than I do with this beast. I just want to avoid getting bent over on this thing any more necessary.

Hey Elramone,
I also own a recent vintage 22 Classic with a 502. Great ride isn't it?
In regards to your Fountain comments, never bring a knife to a gun fight. I have owned three Fountains. 1996 27 fever with 500 HP, GPS at 76. 1997 32 fever with twin 800 SC, radar at 115.7. 1999 32 fever with twin 500 HP, GPS 88.5. You might beat a 27 with a 502, they only run 67-69, but that is about it; unless the guy at the wheel of the fountain has more money than boating sense. So quit your bragging!
Now, when it comes to Bajas, that is a whole other story. I keep looking for places to put a notch every time I blow one of those go-fast bayliners out of the water. Roadtrip says pick your battles wisely and with wisdom. Peace, Todd

I can relate to what your saying... cause we all know no one has more trophies than Reggie. And of course he makes some of the finest offshore vessels in the world... but I did say "ill equiped fountains" of which there are many.... where as they are an easy target. I also feel that Reggie has one huge bummer in his life.... since Don is gone... he can never be king... and because this is a DONZI board... I feel its ok to tote a knife in a gun fight. As for picking battles wisely.... I guess thats a guesstimation of the oppenents equipment from a distance.... so dont look at it as bragging... but rather enjoying taking down fountains. My 22 isnt even really that fast. I have a great bud with an 83 mph 18 Donz... I would never be ashamed to own a Fountain... in fact.. Id like to have one some day... but ist STILL fun to humiliate a guy who just spent 140K on a boat he felt would be the whip out in public. Besides roadtrip.. its kinda obvious who's got the hot ones... even from a distance... IST IT?

Hey Rick... thanks for the reply.
The boats a riot... we have tons of fun beating the **** out of ourselves... The motors a mercruiser Chevy.. and the Gils are wet offshore with custom fit risers. I also had the tips shotgunned and cut a little longer. I took out the silent choice of course to eliminate wieght. In fact.. its for sale on the sale board. I have another that Im restoring and a good friend with a smaller 18 that I can ride with this year. Im goin kinda nuts on lake property this year... and am toning down on toys.

Hey Elramone,
I am not trying to start a forum on the qualities of Reggie or his boats. I was just stating the obvious fact that you had better have one potent Donzi Classic to take a Fountain out. Now, that being said, why don't you and your buddy load that 83 mph 18 Classic up on May 11 and head south to Cumberland for the Annual Awakening of the Horses gathering. You, your buddy, some other twenty-plus Donzi owners, and I will sharpen our knives and go find a fountain or two to slay. I may be a little behind you, but I will be smiling the whole way....

"No...a Z-28 with a 302 will beat the hell out of a Mustang with a 351...blah blah blah..."
Come on!!!
Fountains are Fountains and right now, they hold every single V hull record going. I am an Aronow freak, but you just gotta give the Fountain corporation some credit.
Of course a guy with a hot engine is going to beat a lot of the boats out there, I would expect it! Let's get off the Offshoreonly.com mentality!
Hey GEOO,
I was listening to a conversation recently where your boat was touted as going over 100 MPH!!!!
Congratulations big fella!
I did question the guy and he admitted to overstating the HP and speed. Of course, when I identified myself, the truth came out!
Funny!!!!!
Oh, and no offense intended, hope none taken.

I'm sorry man. I probably should have just let this guy go on about how his 22 Classic eats fountains, but I just couldn't after spending many hours running these boats. I am a Donzi convert, but let's stick to the truth here now. If Mike Miller brings a 33 Daytona with 500HPs to the AOTH, you aren't going to hear me bragging afterwards about how I outran him.
Geeo,
Then elramone starts talking about his buddy's 18 that runs 83 mph. Not me. I openly invite him to bring that boat down to AOTH and we should be able to hunt down fountains all day with it. Until then, it's just talk...
In the meantime, I've got this tricked out Mustang Cobra that will run a Z-28 into the... okay, I'll stop now. todd

Man.... you guys are tough.... I dont think I could run against guys like you. I have to admit Im shocked by a couple things.,...1) you think 73 in a classic is bragging 2) you get upset at the thought of any fountains not able to exceed 73 mph 3) and someone is lying if they know of a Donzi that does 83 mph. Us motor city nuts have always been off based... havent we.... if we got out more we could meet more guys like you who know everything. Im just pulling you guys string.. so dont get snippy... but we really shouldnt be arguing anyway??? I was just listing the boat... period... I dont blame you for not believing me.. I usually dont believe half what I read either. The 18 is a bow tie small chevy... built ... never dyno'd.. but probably in the 425 hp range... with an alpha "believe it or not" and of course.. no extra baggage.

Gee, it just gets worse and worse!!!
Naw, really...there is an 18 out there that does 80+.
I think 73 MPH is a fantastic speed for an 18.
Mine used to go over/about 70 MPH with my old engine, now defunct of course. My new 260 isn't a neck braker, but it will do over 60 MPH, barely.
I make no bones about who I race, it really don't matter. If I think I can give him/her a good race, I'll go for it. Make don't make a difference. Most of these boats now are capable of lots of speed, long as the motor can put out some HP.
I have no idea where we are going in this discussion but I think we have beat it to death.
Let's get out, ride our machines and enjoy!

OK guys this is a data post not a free for all. You guys ar acting like you belong to the old Offshore only group. My dad is bigger than your dad. Just REMEMBER there is no such thing as the fastest boat. When the green flag drops the bull **** stops. The Donzi net is a fraternity of guys trying to help each other --Not a bar fight. This is starting to look bad to me. You want to beat a guy up --E-MAIL them don't do it in public. Here everyone on the net can see it.
My advice is 1) Grow up 2) go back and delete your junk 3) THINK before you type.
We need accurate numbers on this post to help each other out. No bull, you will be found out. Exhample there are two boats both are the same both have bravo drives and the same size prop. One is 10 mph faster than the other. Props can vary 1/2 inch pitch either way, this in no way is 10 mph. If you don't know then state it. Your not running for office so be honest.

The boat came with a 22 pitch prop and it toped out at about 50mph at much lower revs. I also tried a 20 pitch one and more or less the same thing, but a slightly higher top speed. The big difference was the "hole shot" the 22 was a dog and the 15 was a rocket. I am about to use a Haltech E6KGM programable ECU in the boat to optimise the FI. At 6200ft I lose at least 25% hp.

Went to the factory last week. Looks like the new 26ZX is on schedule. May be the newest Donzi on the lake. Supposed to be here on 1 May. Power is the 496HO. No real test data on this package yet. Hopefully the graphics/paint I had put on it won't slow it down to much. I guess we will have to see following the breakin period on the lake is finished.

What did I do for the weekend? I got Genuine Trouble rev'ed up as fast as I've ever gone in a boat - what a blast http://www.donzi.net/ubb/biggrin.gif. Luckily the city police boat I didn't notice http://www.donzi.net/ubb/eek.gif and blew past at WOT didn't seem too upset. All I could do was smile and make a quick wave goodbye!

Also blew off some Formula/Baja/something big and ugly http://www.donzi.net/ubb/rolleyes.gif - he thought he was alone and really moving until he saw my tailpipes going away.

Madpoodle - is your hot boat spread sheet still available? There was a link to it once but now I can't find it.

Kind of like looking at old photo albums before hitting puberty... Geoo's Might mouse shows 80+mph rather than the bajillion (givel or take a trillion) mph he is running now :D

Any thoughts about doing a 2004 version of this? I think my title as the slowest donzi is still safe (other than Budmann's 22 :D ), but you never know. Maybe others have made significant improvements as well.

HP: 260
DRIVE: Alpha one Gen one
PROP: 21P Laser II

BEST MPH @ RPM: 51.8 mph @ 4200 rpms w/ no fuel and a following sea.

Fish, in my experience over the years, a 200hp Outboard is comparable in top speed to a 260hp I/O. (can anyone else agree?) So, it sounds like we are pretty close in hull speed, which is good, I think. Budman said that my boat went 55mph when new. I guess ~3-5mph isn’t a bad loss over 17 years, but I sure would love to get it back! (I think props can help a bit)

Can’t wait to see what the rebuild does for you. My old boat (18ft Mach 1) had a 150hp mercury outboard on it and I played around with it for years. I got a pretty consistent 52mph with various props and a jack plate. I bought a nose cone but never installed it because I think the hull drag was prominent on that boat. Even with the motor trimmed out (with a huge rooster tail,) the hull was still wet up to the driver’s seat. I put a straight edge to the hull one day and it was pretty darn scary. Drag increases exponentially with speed, so I gave up on that boat. Live and learn… you can’t make a performance boat out of an bargain boat!

Anyway, I have several props left over and would be willing to let you (or anyone else on the board) borrow them to see if they give you some speed. I should sell them too, but I like the look of them hanging in my garage.

Amarok,
I hope I will see some mph gains with the new powerhead- it is actually possible that one of my speed problems was that I was dragging a piston (I am told that will slow you down LOL).

Of course another problem is what you already alluded to- too much boat in the water (see pic below). I have a good bow lifting prop that puts me in the right rpm range for my motor (at least the old P-head). I may try 8-12 inches of setback to move the CG aft and get the lower unit in cleaner water. Also considering getting rid of the 100 gal tank that is located in the middle and slightly towards the bow of the boat. If I replaced it with a 50 gal that was a little more aft, I might be able to get more of the bow out of the water. Might be a thought for you as well since you cannot change your setback.

Hey Fish,

A picture is worth a thousand words. That is a lot of boat in the water! It is a bit surprizing. Are you sure those augmented babes arent laying in the bow? :D :D :D

I put a 12inch setback (R&R design manual jacking plate) on my last boat and it made a difference. I think it will help with yours. The manual one was easy to adjust, but you had to stop and turn some wrenches. Once it was dialed in, it worked well.

I know that speed is the goal, but one benefit with the jack plate that I didn't realize when I bought it was that I could run (slowly) in much shallower water. Since the motor was farther back and got cleaner water, I could trim it higher still get some bite. It was a big help for me because some of the ramps that I used to use were in real shallow spots. Those SS props are expensive! Also, it made for much easier beach landings. One potential negative was that since the motor was farther back, it was more susceptible to salt water dowsing, especially coming off plane. I think Mercury does a pretty good job keeping the powerheads dry inside, but it is worth checking out the gaskets in the engine cover. :)

I'll have to take a closer look at mine this summer, or have someone take a picture to see what it looks like under WOT. Maybe the extra 400lbs of stern drive gives me a little lift in the bow??? I do notice that a full tank slows you down quite a bit. But, it is nice to have so much range for offshore runs.

Looking forward to see how your rebuild goes!

wytmike,
great boat, especially with the turbos. Just a thought from a complete novice, but with the hp you are putting out, you might be able to get a few extra mph with a little prop tinkering.

Just messing around with a prop calulator, a 21p, with 1.5 gear, 6200rpm, and 65mph, shows somewhere in the neighborhood of 21% slip. Don't know much about how much the elevation effects it, but thought I would add my $.02.

If interested, I am sure there are folks on the board that might have a suggestion or two on props- who knows, 70+ might not be that far off.

take care,
fish

amarok,
thanks for the advice. I currnetly have a jack plate, but only a few inches of setback. I agree with teh gas tank thing, but running out of ideas how to get the boat out of the water. If after break in I dont get some improvement, then I will move the motor back. Guess I will trun my 23 into a 24' :D

I'll let cha know how it works out. BTW, I am using a prop called a turbo and getting better bow lift on this hull than I did with the mirage or the stiletto (and less slip). I know we have different setups, but thought I would mention it.

Hey Fish,

Did you get that powerhead broken in yet?? What is the verdict??

Also, what pitch is your turbo prop? I was using Mercury Laser II props because they claimed to have more bow lift too! I have a 21P and a 25P. Also, the Laser II props had the removable plugs at the base of the blades which created ventilation on the blades. This was supposed to let the 2 strokes rev up quicker upon acceleration. As you probably know, they are more efficient at higher RPMs. I have been using the Laser IIs with my Apha 1 on the Donzi noticed that when the plugs were removed, I could trim the drive up higher without breaking loose. ie: more bow lift. The Donzi starts to porpoise a bit if the trim is too high, so I am optimistic that the hull will come out of the water with enough power. My old Mach 1 with the outboard never porpoised.

I notice that most guys with I/Os use Mirage Props. The Mirage Props have more diameter and thicker blades than the Laser IIs. Some day I will have to try a Mirage.

Let me know how your boat is running when you have a chance.

Amarok:) :)

I agree with you, I think 20 or 21 pitch props might get me a few more mph, but I enjoy the tons of low end power--the boat will get up an plane very quickly-even with a bunch of people on it-I had 16 people on it once-and it jumped out of the water and still got up to 45mph-plus it handles so well offshore-even in 4-5' chop that i dont want to change a thing----plus i got a deal on the props, and im broke!

Bill you have to give us more info a 76 with a ford thought by then the factory was putting chevies in them, need drive ratio prop specs , my motor is in the 300 hp range my best gps run is 55 with the spinelli have yet to run her wot with gps and the ultra plus now i have a Rootsy carb :D
with my set up

351w 24px 14 1/2 prop i was running 4800 rpms at 53mph gps. I got that prop redone to 25 1/2px 14 1/2 and im doing about 4400 rpms I havent gps'd it yet but its definately faster.

also i have a 18 so im pushing more weight, so i must be in the 380_hp range. I iwll be 400+HP soon and have something up my sleeve for a large boost in speed. ;)

running your numbers on your setup at 10% slip right at 59 mph so if your prop is at 8% or so your in the 60 neighbor hoodyou could be right matty, my buddy has a fourstroke yamaha jetski and he said its doin about 56-58mph and he was creeping away from me in smooth water. so all i really need to do is gps this sucker. Also, i have the 26x 14 ultra which i never threw on because i didnt have the tapped nose lock/cone set up. now i do so i figure ill throw that prop on just to see if it will turn more rpms. granted its a higher pitch but my elephant ear is a large prop and is probably holding my rpms down.
I should be in the 70-75+ neighbor hood next summer, I HOPE....I have an extensive list of modifications to do when the deck is off my boat. matty do you know of anywhere i could house my boat for the deck off work?

Monster - I'm really liking your blue and white 22 with no windshield. Looks great!

Here's a couple pic's. I posted pic's of the engine in the "engine photos thread" under 460 ford

Any suggestions on the Arneson ASD6 drive I'm planning on gettin this winter? Reason I might go with a Arneson is because I believe there is no known adapter to mate a Ford 460 to Bravo XR. I guess anything can be made though...
