Do you know where I can download a free player to play and/or convert RA files to MP3 or some other standard format? I tried all of my usual places like hotfiles and such with no luck.

Thanks

Brad

How many files do you want to convert? Most of the free ones are a nightmare if you want to do more than a few.

Jay,

Just three files so far. We went to see Meatloaf the other night, Patti Russo is one of his back up singers and she is great! I went to her website and there are three songs that you can download, so I did. But they are in "RA" format and I have nothing I can use to play or burn them to a CD so I can play them on a CD player or my MP3 player.

Gotcha. Ok- if it's just going to be those few, I'd go and download Total Recorder. You can find it here: http://www.highcriteria.com/ . I'd just download the standard edition and then uninstall it when you're finished converting the files.

I don't know if you have a burner, or what kind of music software you use (a lot of people use Winamp) but I really like Musicmatch. The newer versions of it are great. It acts as a jukebox on your computer and can burn music, record music off of your audio cds from your CD rom tray and convert them to mp3 and store to your hard drive, etc. You can get it at www.musicmatch.com (http://www.musicmatch.com) . I've never looked back since I switched from Winamp to that one.

I have it on all the home machines and play all my music in the office using it.

Never heard of RA files. Try Music Match Jukebox, but to encode them in Mp3 quality that is better than the AM radio quality, you need a serial number. Drop me a email when you get the program. ( hyperbaja17@hotmail.com ) and ill send a copy of a serial number.

For burning, try using NERO burning ROM. It seems to be the best, no buffer under run errors and it just mey burn those RA files (try nero before Music Match). For a copy of NERO, look on KaZaA. You may have heard about KaZaA spyware..... go here for the version w/o spyware http://doa2.host.sk/ Does anyone want to get rid of KaZaA spyware they already have? Speak up and ill post it.

ra is just a RealAudio file, HyperBaja

Hey- is that Kazaa version without the spyware the one that has the doctored cd_clint.dll file?

Real Audio  DUH!!!! Have to wake my brain up!!

As for the Kazaa Q, I think so, but switching to that and uninstaling kazaa wont get rid of spyware already on your pc. you have to do the following:

CNET Networks assumes no liability in publishing these instructions, which people may choose to follow at their own risk. As always, it's a good idea to make a backup of any critical files before proceeding.

1. In the Windows Control Panel, select an option called "Add/Remove Programs." One of the options will be "b3d Projector." Highlight this and click the "Change/Remove" button.

You may get a message that the uninstall has been successful. Search your computer for a "BDE" folder, which most likely will be found in the "WinNT" or "Windows" directory. In this folder will be a file called "bdeclean.exe". Run this to finish the first part of the process. Delete the BDE folder.

Caution: An unrelated piece of software called Borland Database Engine also creates a BDE directory. If you think you may have this software installed, or if there is any confusion whatsoever, do not delete this directory.

2. In the "Temp" directory (this will normally be found inside the "Windows" or "WinNT" directory) is a folder called "Brilliant." This contains many files. Delete the entire folder.

3. After performing steps 1 and 2, you will need to locate and remove some additional Brilliant Digital files that have been placed in critical system-level computer directories. CAUTION: Deleting the wrong files could interfere with the normal functioning of your computer. These files will most likely be in the "WindowsSystem" or "WinNTSystem32" folder:

bdedownloader.dll
bdedata2.dll
bdefdi.dll
bdeinsta2.dll
bdeinstall.exe
bdesecureinstall.cab
bdesecureinstall.exe
bdeverify.exe
bdeverify.dll

Delete these files.

That's kind of a hairy procedure, man!!! It looks like the guys over at CNET don't want to plug Ad-Aware. Ad-Aware SHOULD find all the crap and clean it off the computer. It shows a log of files it is going to toast if you give it the ok and I'd make sure the files you listed are in there just to be safe.

Uninstall Kazaa.

Download and run Ad-Aware (it's free) to clean out gator, cydoor, and any other residual spyware. The original cd_clint.dll is going to get wiped out here.

Download Kazaa Lite and run Ad-Aware one more time. Toast everything that it identifies as spyware but the new doctored cd_clint.dll file that Ad-Aware will indentify and you'll be in business. The new cd_clint.dll included with Kazaa Lite is just a doctored script that allows Kazaa Lite to run when it checks to make sure that you have the spyware installed. The program will be duped into thinking you still have the spyware running.

That will work, but dont try and keep KaZaA and run ad aware, KaZaA wont run if it isnt there.

And the alternative to Kaaza would be?

I've got a virgin computer and can now burn CD's... although at 56k, I may find it beyond my lauded patience to download. Been to Gnutella, but had no clue which client I should use... any hints as to the best one, guys? (And yes, I read the FAQ... just don't want to end up with the junk that I stupidly downloaded on the old laptop.) Also saw references to Norton not running with some of the clients... had planned on installing Norton, but would something else work better with music files? Computer came loaded with Nero, so I've got that covered.

I haven't felt this stupid on a subject since the first time I read a post of Jamie Root's...

Bunches,

Celene 'eternally blonde'

Okay, not having much luck today. First I have Nero and I do not find any referance to "RA" or Real Audio files, so that wont work. Second, I went to download Total Recorder but the free download is only good for 40 seconds of recording. Last but not least I tried to go to the website where I downloaded the files so I could post a link for Hyperbaja but the site will not load correctly. Go figure! Will have to try another day. Thanks for everyone's help.

Happy New Year everyone!

Brad

If you can find a place to put a serial number in on Total Reocrder (normally in the help part of the bar) enter this:

Name: Serials 2000 s/n: TR30-48Z8-G2D2-VKH8-LVTS

That should open the whole program.

Toona, Kazaa Lite is Kazaa without all the spyware. If you installed Kazaa, uninstall it, run "Ad Aware" and then get Kazaa Lite.

As for antivirus-Norton hands down. Had Mcaffe fully updated, then got a copy of Norton and installed it, found 30 viruses right away that Mcaffe had been missing.

That's the whole thing that makes it work (or not work). Ad-Aware will show you a list of files that it believes are spyware and will give you the option of deleting them or keeping them.

But you definitely need to uninstall the original Kazaa, run ad-aware, then install Kazaa lite.

And the alternative to Kaaza would be? Toonafish- they all have their drawbacks. I haven't found one sharing program yet that doesn't have some kind of bad quirk. In the early days of file swapping I used to use a 56k modem, but taking 20 minutes to download a 4 or 5 minute long song wore thin after a while.

Gotta love Napster....

I still think Kazaa Lite is the best thing since then.
Plus-
File resume
Can find any type of file(music, movies, programs)
Downloads file from many people increasing bandwith (not noticeable on 56k)

minuses-
lots of files with wrong name
can find any type of file (viruses porn etc)
