That has always been my favorite car. Even the color.
Why did they have such a rust problem??

Scot, Rust problem was the factory undercoating, too brittle!!! A stone would chip it and moisture would lay between undercoating and metal. I am celebrating 31 yrs. of listening to my pantera rust on a quiet night......Ed P.S. Solution strip all the undercoating off with a grinder approx 100 hrs. and just use oil

Scot:

They rusted because they were Italian! Have you ever seen a Fiat that old that wasn't a rust bucket?
Seriously though, in order to keep the price to $10,000 and keep it "the afFORDable supercar", as opposed to $17,000 for the Ferrari Dino, they had to cut some corners. One area was the interior, a sea of heat stamped black vinyl. The other major area was rustproofing.
My car was completely stripped in an alkaline bath and then rustproofed with the same stuff that BMW and Mercedes Benz uses.
After working on the car you do come away with the impression that it's essentially a Fiat with a 351 Cleveland stuffed into it!

My yellow fever started at an early age. I was 15 when I got this gem:
