smoking, that is, about 24 hrs ago. Part of my strategy, on top of mustering any self discipline
I have, is to let all of my friends know. I figure that way the peer pressure will be
overwhelming. I have met at least 100-125 of you personally...thats alot of pressure if you all
decide to exert it. And I hope you do.

best,

harbormaster

Good Job man.
It can do alot of damage that does not show up until your later years when you really need all the good health you can get.

Good for you.

Obviously, you know about the physical withdrawal. At some point, you'll probably have to start reminding yourself that you don't smoke anymore - that's the mental addiction. After a year or so, it will be the most disgusting thing you have ever seen and smelled.

Use the patches or gum if you have to or go John Wayne style (cold turkey). Either one, be ready for your friends to hate you for the next 3 weeks. Remind them that it is not you, its the DT's talkings

Digger,

I smoked for 30 years...was up to 3 packs a day when I quit. I quit "cold turkey" about 8 years ago. One of the best things I ever did. Stick with it; your body will reward you in many ways, not the least of which is a significantly greater life expectancy and the ability to enjoy it. You'll be amazed at how fast the morning coughing and the night-time wheezing go away!

Stick with it big guy,

Phil

One word. Peppermints. They are the best thing since sliced bread, except perhaps a burning fag. I currently have ten pounds of them sitting on my bedside table. (Mints, that is, not a small gay man or British cig.) I have a coupon for the patch in my purse. I have mega packs of gum stashed in the truck. But mints were the only thing that saved my sanity when I quit last time.

That said, I am waiting til the first. Of January. Maybe February. But definitely the first.

So prove to me that it can be done. Go where no Digger has gone before. And if you try the mint method, be sure to make an appointment with your Dentist first. But best of luck and keep us updated with your success!

I was a two pack a day smoker. 10 years later still miss the smoke with the coffee and the smoke with the beer...won't BS you. But you start to realize how anti social smoking is. People do not like it around them. People make laws opposing it. Must be something to it if entire cities ban it...
But it is still difficult. Hang in there. If you need to purchase a pack(s) of smokes purchase a pack you dislike and make a pact with yourself that you will smoke all those cigarettes very quickly. Faster then usual...wear yourself down.

Wish you good luck with it. It is difficult but certainly doable.

Glad to see someone else on the same road. :)

Its so funny that smoking was sooooo cool when we got in to it , and now it is sooo uncool..... and expensive that it makes no sense to continue.

By now, you are really hitting the wall at 48 hours, and cause you have now lived past your expectations and found it to be very enjoyable - this unexpected second half. Thats not only an act of walking past the cigs... its an act of embracing life.

Your mind and body are now at war. Its your mind that no longer wants the smoking. And its your body/brain (limbic system) that wants the drug. That is the basis of the internal conflict thats in your head right now. Unforntunately, the body has alot of access to the brain and therefore the mind.

The idea, that "I am smoke free," is concrete: Carved out in stone, with gold leaf over it.

Any little voices that bubble up; tell them to look at the idea, and have alot of ammo to throw at those thoughts. And if a voice becomes compelling, examine what it is saying. Know the enemy. You will find a weakness in this "gotta smoke" voice that you can use......

But even better, is too give Mr. Body what It really wants: A big ol' milk shake, fried chicken; before, during, and after 12 hours of hot, funky sex. Cause, these things are of the language that the body understands. wink

you guys are awesome (even Pearson wink )... thanks. I'm at 36 hrs. no patch, no nicorette, F all that stuff my Father quit cold turkey, I figure I can too. First big test was last night...had a nice biggg meal, sat around awhile, let that post meal craving set in, listening to the mind/body argue silently (well said btw Owen)... then, I got really likkered up... that was interesting... talked/yelled to myself occasionally... I was a cast member from "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". And now the morning coffee. I'm going to win.

Celene just do it.

Digger , you can do this!

I quit 12 yrs ago cold turkey, but I did it with a total change of habit,
smoke with coffee in the morning, gave up coffee drank oj instead, also stayed away from the pubs for the first 6 months to resist the beer and smoke thingy, but after a year I can have coffee and beer without the urge for nicotene.
Stay with it good luck

You can do it Digger.

I quit almost eleven years ago. I went to the doctor in the morning to get a prescription for the patch. Then I went to three drug stores to fill the prescription, but nobody had them. At first I thought to myself I guess it is not in the cards for me to quit at this time. But I made my mind up that I was going to quit. I think that is the most important thing; you must be set on quitting not just trying to quit. Once you truly make your mind up to quit it becomes easier. We are all pulling for you!

By the way, the day I quit was also the same day that Kim found out she was pregnant with our son Kyle.

Digger,

We've never met. But, the best thing you can do is quit. I was never a smoker, but my dad, three packs a day, died from lung cancer. Not a happy day in my life.

I use to hear EVERY reason why he shouldn't/couldn't quit.

Just do it,

Semper Fi,
Had to throw that in, even though I was Air Force.

Digger,
We are all pulling for you. A little extra incentive: 2 packs per day, @ 3.50 a pack, is $2,555.00 per year. The extra cash should go a long way towards Upgrades to the Donzi. Not to mention quitting will go a long way towards being around to enjoy it when it is an antique.

When all else fails, don't buy them any more. It is a lot easier to fight the urge at the store, than to fight the urges when you have that "emergency pack" hidden somewhere.

Way to go Digger! You'll make it through alive. I quit over 4 years ago, after smoking consistently from the ripe old age of 12. Now it's a matter of training yourself to do things differently, enjoying the coffee and beer minus the cigarette. Best thing is, once you get your true senses of smell and taste back, the coffee and the beer will be even better. I also recommend giving into the other cravings that you'll have. No sense it making your life completely miserable, right? For me, it was chocolate chip cookies. 10 pounds gained is much better than 1 or 2 lungs lost.

Keep up the good work!

RH

Hang in there Digger, I am glad to hear that you are on your way to better health. My father is 76 and is fighting the effects of smoking. He smoked from childhood until his dad died from them in 1970. Then quit for a decade and got healthy until he started again in 1980 and smoked until 1990. Now he is borderline on needing oxygen. He uses his golf cart to drive down to the dock in his back yard to use his boat. My folks have their evening cocktails every night and still crave for a smoke. I see them at parties and they will stand by someone smoking while they are catching the second hand smoke. It bothers me that I have to see my father fight for air at his age when they could be enjoying life more. YOU CAN DO IT!

Digger...

Can't say I have ever smoked... so I really don't know what those cravings are like. What I do know is that you have accomplished much harder things. You went through some of the toughest training on earth to become a marine, not satisfied with that, you learned to fly some of the most advanced avionics ever built, still not happy with flying, you learned to do it at night, with only a FLIR pod & some instruments. I won't get inot the weapons qualifications.... then, you got the top billet, OPS officer for HMX-1... Don't really think theres too much higer to go there, with the exception of perhaps command of your own squadron! You can do this, you will do this! Think of all of the times going thru training when you could have quit but didn't... This is just like eating pancakes....

Of course, had you quit a few months ago, you might have had a better excuse for the "Great Pizza Incident"....

Digger,
Best of luck to you. And take Dino's word as gospel-never think you can smoke just one. I quit for two and a half years and thought I'd smoke just one while I had a drink, like my friends did-big mistake. It started a ridiculous cycle of buying a pack, smoking only while I was at school (college) and then throwing the remainder of the pack out the window of my car on the hour drive home. I must have thrown out 2 dozen half-packs of Marlboro Lights on the I275 exit of I75 South! I finally admitted to my spouse (and myself) that I was a smoker again. That was 8 years ago. When I quit the next time, I will never be silly enough to think I can smoke one or two occasionally. When I finally kick this, it will have to be to NEVER touch another cigarette.

Owen that is great!! Hang in there!

Day 8 here, last night was real tough for some reason... but still smoke free.

There is strength in numbers! Celene what a perfect opportunity to jump on the bandwagon!

My mother, who quit about 15 yrs ago, has been giving me great advice, almost daily. One was to get a big glass jar, start putting money in to equal the amount I used to spend on butts... I've really taken that one onboard, all that dough is going into the boat :)

anybody else with quitting stories, we would love to hear them...

My wife and I quit one week apart.

I led the charge because she was complaining to her mother that she wanted to quit, but she wasn't getting a lot of support. Her mom said "Well, what do you expect with that husband of yours still smoking." Haven't smoked since I heard that. You could say that I quit for spite. Whatever, it worked. Of course I might have been played like a cheap piano.

Also managed to put on 20lbs.

Everything freezed around me, the moments of cold comfort - I remember the days when there was no heat or dry- and said to myself," just move through the misery kid." And I promised myself, if I ever figured a way out of this smoking thing, I'm going to change and never go back. Well its been happening -- Cold Turkey! Day Six.

Thanks Digger......... I was never qualified to be the best in the world like you, but hey........... I quit....also.

HOWEVER I love walking into a club full of stuffy old ground pounders on a base where there are very few aviators. A wrinkled zoom bag and leather flight jacket never fails to piss 'em off. One time, more than a couple years ago, a grunt came up to me and said "you've got a lot of nerve...what are you doing here in a flight suit?" I took a swig of beer and said "spending my flight pay" Fortunately I had backup because that didn't go over well. But I digress... the point of this? To be honest I'm not sure I understand all of your post but I think I get the gist of it. All I can say is to hell with the addiction. Embrace a future without it, and never, I mean never, take counsel of your fears.

Day three... and I'm wondering if it is possible to overdose on soy nuts?

What the hell is a soy nut ...

Nice work, keep it up.

Roasted soynuts... may be the reproductive part of the soyplant? (I'll call the farm in Iowa and find out...)

Suck the salt off it, roll it around between your teeth and tongue, bite it in half. Repeat.

A poor substitute, but it's sufficing.

Sorry 'bout that last post (now deleted), my little internal conflict is taking some pretty strange roads this week. Yesterday's road was alittle bumpy. Today is much better. wink

Trying to think of something nice to give to myself at the 30 day mark. Which in dollars saved, comes to about $150.00

I also want to thank you guys for helping me get this far. Two weeks and two days. Man, I'm glad you guys are watching. :)

"Embrace a future without it, and never, I mean never, take counsel of your fears." Digger, that wording was like a laser into my mind. Perfect.... wink

Sounds like Digger has beaten this into submission.

Glad to hear a few others have joined in - think of all the extra gas money for the Donzi.

don't think I've ever had a soy nut. but I am eating alot. cooking my ass off, the fridge is full of leftovers. and PT'ing more to try to make up for it. I have also been mesmerized by the money saved...what a great reason to quit, a rock solid excuse to spend more money on the boat!

Digger's holding up, how about you other two, it's time for your Monday morning check in. :D

Owen - the money you've saved would go a long way if you visited Lenny.

Celene - did the salmon burn Friday night, or did you burn the salmon for some second hand smoke :D

Doing good here. Still have a hard time with the sweaty eye lids, a very odd manifestation of withdrawl. Ten more days till one month! Yahooo!!!!

I want a cig. I hate the world. It's been seven long and bloody days.

I have discovered that people are incredibly tolerant of temper tantrums as long as you preface them with "I'm quitting." It is kind of fun acting rotten.

Oh, and Boxy, the smoke alarm has always been my cooking timer... a bit harsh on baked goods, but fine for most of what I create!

Bunches,

Celene "what's PT'ing?"

Digger

"PT" = Physical Training. which for me means running mostly...which is getting remarkably easier on the lungs for some reason...

I checked this thread way back in the beginning and haven't been back since. I just caught up on the whole situation. Kudos to all of you.

Digger as you know I was a smoker when you came to visit. I sucessfully put the pack down about 2 1/2 months ago. I went from a pack a day to 0 via cold turkey. I feel all your pain, but all of you, even Celene, are almost out of the tunnel.

I like to focus on the things I used to think I couldn't do w/out cigs. I had to re-learn lots of stuff and it was tough, but those tasks seem easy and trivial now.

I can now:
Drive in my car cig free (now I use two hands)
Eat breakfast cig free
Eat lunch cig free
Eat dinner cig free
Drink coffee cig free
Spend a night in a smokey bar cig free
Shoot pool cig free
Work in the garage cig free
Work 'til lunch cig free
Walk out of a movie cig free
Watch the game cig free
Hang in the chat room cig free.

What can all of you now do that previously required cigarettes? I bet it's a lot of things you don't even realize. We're just re-learning how to operate. Good luck to all who choose to quit.

Randy, you forgot one more.....
...spend an hour riding your sled in a beautiful outdoor location, stop to soak up some scenery, and not reach for a cig...

Ranman
01-21-2003, 12:20 PM
That's right Boxy, I used to always stop on my sled for a break, rip off my helmet, and light up. I used to always smoke on my boat in no wake zones. No more.

You can do it guys. Think about how much better you feel already. Think about how much smoking doesn't matter to you anymore.

Wow! Congtrats on making it stick. If you can believe someone could be so stupid, I had always been very active and athletic including basketball and other strenuous sports, but started smoking at age 39 thinking it was enjoyable to have one when I drank beer. A pack would last about a week. Today I can smoke a pack easily in one night out at the bars and some days I'll buy two packs. I never smoke at home but while driving or beering. I am right behind you because I am beginning to understand it does not fit my lifestyle. A body can only take so much for so long and you never know when too long will come.

Hey gang, just stopped in to see how everyone is doing. Looks GREAT! Keep up the good work! Randy, I didn't know you had also kicked the habit, but congrats to you also! Probably a little easier to dock the Donzi in Detroit on the river now that you won't have to baby sit a cig and fight the current. Should make for easier clean-up of the interior also. Let me know if there is anything I can do for any of you to help in your quest! :)

toughest test yet. I had an "interesting" flight yesterday due to some weather issues, at the completion of which I was happy to be on the ground. I couldn't believe how bad I wanted a cigarette. If someone had offered me one the second I stepped out of that helicopter I would have smoked it. But they didn't, so I didn't. then thankfully it tapered off.

Digger, how many hours have you logged on your current platform, you have an "interesting" flight, and you need a butt. What would of the rest of us have needed, a dry pair of pants, and 3 week nap ? :D

Keep it up everyone, we are all pulling for you.

just a bit of info for all who are quiting. my brother was a chain smoker. 3 packs a day. 4 if he went to the bar that night! he would punch in at 7am, and be putting out his 10th. cig of the day! (not a light smoker) (no joke) he has been smoke free for 17 some years i think.....HATED! CIG SMOKE! couldnt stand it! was about as anti smoker as it gets. then one fine day about a year and a half ago, he took a puff of a cigar from one of his friends in a bar, and that was it!!!!........3 packs a day! AGAIN!!!!! pardon the pun but,,, the smoke NEVER clears! even 17 years later! dont EVER think you are cured, because you are not. stick with it, and keep sticking with it! i dont ever want to meet you and have to say "i told you"

thanks Boxy.
--day 65
--I feel better, no doubt about that
--still crave a smoke at night, after dinner, if I happen to be leaning into the booze. (er, I mean, having an apertif) sometimes I will go most of the day without thinking about a cigarette
--I believe anyone can quit. If they want to.

Reading these posts inspired my Wife and myself to quit. We haven't even stumbled once and it has been a month.

We are rewarding ourselves with a new cottage. I sure hope it is worth it :)

To digger and everyone else who is quitting.KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ITS WELL WORTH IT :)

I quit about 2- 3years ago(I dont even rember when)-which is a good thing.....

If it wasnt for me quitting smoking MY boat would STILL be sitting on blocks with a blown motor....

I wouldnt have a full blown race atv either.I think I actually have more in my bike then my boat.(not for long wink )

I used to use ALTOIDS.

I know some of yall will turn your nose up on this, but everytime I had a craving for a cigarette I would smoke a bowl of mary J to the head. Lets just say I was anhilated for 2 weeks.

I recently quit smokin mary and its a joke to quit.(alot easier then cigs)

Its like there wasnt even a whine outta me for some mary j. I just pass it up now.

I still keep getting Mail from Scott Pearson with these little brown tabs in them and a little letter that says eat me.

Hes a bad influence. :p
