this is a lil rough draft of the how to to install a transom water pickup.

Why should you install a transom water intake pick up? One, its a upgrade for any I/O boat. Two, if you ever run aground your motor wont suck up the muck at the bottom. THREE If you happen to have water intake problems you can disregard any air intake leaks usually related to outdrives(especially volvo).

First thing to do is to trace the back side of the water pick up onto a peice of manilla paper, This will be your template so try to be exact.

If you do not make this template it will be virtually impossible to get the water pick up lined up with the bottom of the hull. The pipe that goes through the hull makes this alignment difficult without the template.

once you have found a good spot for the template. being sure there is clearance for the drive gimbal and that the pick up is as far down on the transom as possible and still being able to be 90 degrees on the transom and FLUSH with the bottom of the hull like so:

(you have to use the template to get this right)

Once you have all the angles right its time to mark the 4 mounting holes and the large pipe.

The first hole you want to drill is for the large pipe that will feed water to your motor. The reason this is drilled first before the mounting holes is because there may be some slight angle variations and the hole for the pipe may have to be drilled a bit larger in order to have the transom pick up fit flush to the transom.(this wont be a problem because it wil be filled in with 3m fast cure 5200)

Once the pick up fits flush against the transom now it is time to align the bottom of the pick up with the bottom of the hull.(some people just bolt these pick ups on striaght up and down with 2-3 inches hanging under the bottom of the hull)- this way does work but definately will scrub speed off. We own donzis and like to do things the right way so.....

Once the inlet of the pick up is aligned FLUSH with the bottom of the hull mark all the mounting holes with a pencil(or if you must drill a little hole) making sure the pick up does not move when penciling in or drilling any of these holes.

notice theres NO WAY the pick up can suck any water if the pipe pick up hole is drilled in the wrong place

but when you move it to the correct position it will work well

now once the pick up is flush with the transom and all your mounting holes are marked. its time to drill for the mounting bolts. Now, the way the 16 and 18 ft classic are made the bottom holes of this style pickup(mercruiser) will be right where the stringer is.(when I did mine I almost had both bolts go on either side of it) ALMOST !one of them went into the stringer.
This is not a problem.

I used large 4 1/2" long stainless wood screws to hold the bottom mounting holes in place and I used bolts and lock nuts to hold the top mounting holes in place(through the hull)

Once all the holes are drilled , bolt the transom pick up to the back of the transom, make sure everything still aligns the way it should. once this is checked and double checked its time for the final stage.

THE BEST PART!!!!

go to your marine store and pick up some 3m fast cure 5200- this is a marine sealant made out of polyurethane and works best(scott p loves this stuff)

First thing to do is clean the area of the boat where the transom pick up is going to be. The same thing should be done to the back of the transom pick up itself.(I used acetone)- if you use acetone and painted the pick up make sure you dont hit the outside body of the pick up, because it will take off the paint.

now, gennerously apply this tto all the holes in the transom and over the surface where the pick up is going.

and on the pick up as well DONT MISS ANY AREA!!

Once the 5200 has been applied let it sit for about 5-10 minutes. Stuff some paper towels into the pipe so the 5200 doesnt make a mess inside the pipe (once the pick up is bolted up you can take out the towel and there will be no mess inside the pipe). Then carefully align it onto its place on the transom (try not to be to off youll make a complete mess) slide the bolts through the pick up and the hull and prceed to tighten up the bolts.

once you have bolted the pick up you can either wait for the 5200 to cure or you can wipe it off the pick up with a paper towel(you will use alot of paper towels) this is a tedious task.

CONGRATULATIONS you have just finished instalation of a transom pick up.

damn this thing needs some editing...

I will work on it, but I need to see it...

I hope it posts this topic with all these images..

Good Job Broque! Can you add a paragraph at the top on why you are installing this water pickup?
Is it original or aftermarket, bla, bla, bka...
