Holiday shopping crowds
Go early or late to avoid crowds, make a positive challenge (smiles), people watch, go with a friend, don’t procrastinate, find a still quiet place afterward.



Overspending
Have a set amount to spend on each person, pay in cash, remember the goal is is to express feelings not wealth, focus on thought not cost.



Family demands
Be practical in dividing time, give plenty of travel time, focus on quality not quantity. Can’t always be fair or equal, compromise.



Family conflicts
If trying to suppress try exercise or a theraputic letter, if needing to confront remember to balance 1 negative with 5 positives, take note of what you appreciate about the person your conflicting with. Keep it brief, no expectations, be realistic-normalize, disengage.



Pushing your limits
Don’t. Get at least 8 hours of sleep. Set limits on self. Break tasks (wrapping, decorating) into smaller parts, ask for help, accept help,listen to your body, know when to quit.



Loneliness
Don’t isolate, volunteer at a hospital or shelter, participate in a play or holiday activity, organize a dinner for others who are alone, foster a pet (or several).



Grief and Loss
Common occurrence, focus on positive time spent with person, make a contribution or donation or gesture in their honor.



Overindulgence in Alcohol
How to determine? Examples. Guidelines: 1 drink per hour, max of 3, food prior to, 16 oz. of water in between drinks.



Overindulgence in Food
How do you know? No a.m. appitite, clothes too tight.
Guidelines: eat healthy foods first, eat a light healthy meal before a party, make 1st round at party healthy food, utilize low fat, sugar free- but less doesn’t mean more.

Summary:
Keep your perspective! Have a sense of humor. Remember that the purpose of the holiday is to honor your beliefs and to celebrate life, family, and friends.
