Why are the large Merc outboards refered to as Bridgeports? Is it because the are in Bridgeport NY, and if so why do they use this as a reference.....ie: are Bridgeports better?
Thanks
Mike
I think it actually has to do with the port design of the motor. I think they connect or "bridge" the exhaust ports. I am not 100% sure.

Bridgeport is the head design.

Both CDMA and Lenny are correct. But Not all large displacement outboards from Merc are Bridgeports. The 2.4 bridgeport was very popular with the Scream & Fly guys... Just my .02

Thanks for clearing that up. I have seen quite a few 2.4's listed as Bridgeports on boats for sale. I couldn't find any info on why exactly they were called BP's
