Yeah right! Well, she's getting closer anyway. I'm looking for prop recommendations for a 1972 18 foot Sutphen Gran Sport with a Volvo AQ311 package...a 350 CI Chevy small block, with 311 stock horsepower (now maybe 320 with thru hull high rise exh.). Lost the last prop and no info for a starting point.
For the curious...I designed the L-shaped interior after the Sweet 16, and then dropped in a thickly bolstered drivers seat with built in Gaffrig throttle\shifter. The Bennett trim tabs make all the difference, providing a smooth ride in any conditions.

Sharp looking boat! What kind of performance are you getting on top end? How is the ride?

Very nice. I like the controls/seat combination

She was running low-to-mid-60’s with the last propeller at the recommended max of 5,200 RPM (according to Volvo), so I’m hoping there’s a little more speed in her with a bigger wheel. As far as ride quality, honestly she used to pound a bit rough in the chop at low and medium speeds, but the faster she rans the smoother the ride got. Jumping cabin cruiser waves on the Connecticut river in my early 20’s, was a blast!. Now in California (hitting the Colorado river), the addition of dual-ram Bennett tabs has smoothed out the ride at every speed. See “dnovick3.jpg” and look for the ram controls just forward of the Gaffrig throttles. Picking up new dual-axle “Load-Rite” trailer tomorrow!

Formula Jr. (anyone?)- Are you suggesting this will cause the boat to list under power? Can anything be done to change the direction of the prop rotation? Thanks. Dave

Not sure if the Volvo 290 is like my old Volvo 250, but on the 250 all you had to do was take the cover (2 screws as you look at the drive from the back of the boat) off and in there was a rod mounted to the shifter lever. Move it from what-ever side it is on to the other side and the prop rotation changes from left to right. Basically what happens is when you move the throttle forward it now runs the drive in reverse thus making your prop now turn right instead of left. Of course you'll need to now mount a right handed rotation prop instead of the lefty.

The Volvo 290 has the same adjustment as the 250, 270, & 280 for LH / RH rotation. Is it a good idea to change (the rotation) after the gears have been running one direction so long?

BBB - I wanted a stainless prop for my 250 and the only way I could get one with enough pitch was to change the drive to right hand rotation. My Classic was a left hand steer boat and yes I did have some list, but it wasn't to bad. As far as the changing the rotation after running left for so long? Drive had been running left for 12 years and when changed, ran for 3 years right with no problems as of the boats sale this year. Just a note, I wasn't running any big HP through it though. We purchased a 22 with Merc.

Great input, thanks. I will likely swap the prop and counter the rotation with my next prop purchase.
Here's a few shots from this past weekend at Bass Lake in CA, with the new Trailrite Trailer, Canopy, and other accessories (ahemmmm).
What speeds can you run with said canopy, anyone?
Thanks, Dave
FYI - the images are at 1024 x 768 pixels...so hopefully we're all not still living in the dark ages.
