The 21' Superboat Legend is a boat that I too admire. I loved this hull when it was but under the Challenger name. I used to see these boats with 235 Johnsons and they flew; in fact one day a friend of mine was going through the Atlantic City inlet with his 18 2 + 3 equipped with a Berkeley Jet and this Challenger just walked right by us.
eek!

I've ridden on a friends 24' Superboat. It runs on a pad and is quick with stock power. I didn't notice any bad habits or wander on the pad as I drove down the lake. If I were looking for something other than a Donzi, it would be on my list of boats to check out again for the cuddy performance boat.

Sharp looking boat have seen them run, but never been aboard. RT on the board had a 24 for awhile. Drop him a line.

I don't like the look of the outboard set up. I also can't believe how much an outboard goes for? WOW!! A 4 stroke 250 for approx $10k?? Is that right? The whole boat goes for approx $9-14k. Any advantages I am missing? I assume top 1/2 can be rebuilt for a lot less?? Thanks MOP I called those Boat Survey guys you listed with no return calls?? Wanted somebody to take a look at something for me.

I had one last year. Super well made boat. 22 degree deadrise 6" pad. Very fast with good rough water capabilities. Had a 235 Merc when I got it went around 72. Put a 300 Evinrude V8 on it and it went 82-84.

Yamaha and Bombardier both have direct injection two strokes out now that according promo stuff are cleaner and have a much better power to weight ratio. We may see 4 strokes loose some of the foot hold they have gained. Both of the above 2 strokes are posting better numbers across the board, fuel economy and less emissions. Time will tell.

My bro-in-law has a 25' Contender and he just installed a 2003 225 4 stroke Yamaha..

Boat is now 4 mph slower, 200#'s heavier and as thirsty as the original 1990 perfect running 250 Yamaha it replaced. He's been towed in 3 times so far, first 3 times out..

I think it was a backward move. VERY quiet and smooth engine though.

In looking to purchase a new boat, I am checking out both a new 2002 leftover 22ZX as well as a new Superboat 21 Legend. I am visiting the Superboat factory this weekend and the owner is taking me for a ride in a 21 Legend with a 6.2 MX Merc IO, which he says should move the boat to 70-75 mph. Any enlightened comments on this apples to oranges comparison between the 21 Legend and the 22 ZX?
Thanks

Are they still in Lindenhurst? I went by there but it looked like abandoned wharehouse?? Ask them if they have or know of any old used 21's for sale my budget is 1/2 of a new one. Thanks

Yes, they are still in Lindenhurst. I will be calling for directions on Friday. I will go this weekend if the weather is decent. I will ask if they have any quality used 21's
Thanks

The old Superboat plant on Queen St is closed. They moved out of there a few years ago. I know they have a small place on the water, across from my boat slip, but I don't know if they build boats there. Let us know how much they want for a new 21 Superboat with the 6.2MX. Also, I think the 22 Donzi is more like the 24 Superboat, no? The 21 is a small, low deck boat with a 21 degree bottom. Fast, but not as great in rough water. If anyone is looking for a nice 21 Superboat at a decent price, look for a 21 Challenger. The 21 Superboat is actually a 1970's vintage Challenger that Superboat aquired the molds for. You can read some posts about the two boats here;

I have known John for over 30 years now and he builds a great boat. I have owned a 16' sport, 21'
cutdown24, a 24' oldstyle, bought new 83. I've ridden/driven all the rest except the 34. I owned the factory Challenger raceboat and raced for 2 years with that.Be careful with older Challengers
as they came with balsa cored transoms and when water got to them through motor bolt holes they went soft. I have often thought of getting another 24' as has great lines, quality, layout,
roughwater capability, dry running, and all around
use boat.Many ocean trips to NYC,Block Island,Point Pleasant,NJ, etc.

I have seen a few reasonably priced 21's but I am not sure about the outboard deal? I thought these were great rough water boats? I would assume wet ride like 18' Donzi due to low sides? The search continues.

I was around the early Challengers on my lake as a high school kid 77-80 doing odd jobs for guy who had two a red and white 21 family boat with a 200 merc ob mid 60's and rock solid and a blue and white 21 with twin 200's called infinity 3 low 80's and very solid, also knew a guy who had a brown and white with BB power and a merccruiser, real fast, real wild, he died in that boat after what they think was catching a k plane and well the rest the story is not good.
I loved skiing off the single was a real nice boat, I believe superboats has improved on the boat,If I get a non donzi it will be a 21 legend for sure

I have seen a few good deals listed as "Superboats" Is LI Superboat the only manufacturer with that titled name? How do I tell?? There is a 24 with 2 350's which the owner states is a 1980 Superboat as per the title? A little much for a 1st boat but hey just because it goes 75 doesn't mean you have to go that fast? There is also a Redline 22? local which owner claims is Superboat with additional stretch?? AHHH the confusion.

ducati,

i dunno where "LI Superboat" came form other than the fact that Superboats are made on Long Island...

a can't offer any help on redline, but the 24 Superboat is a greta handling boat, although they need alot of horsepower to go real fast...

a firnd had a 24 with a single 225 o/b and it rand low 60's...that's why you see a few out there with twins running mid 80's

the I/O you are looking at may be a good place to start...how much are they looking for?

I beleive the pricing was approx $12k with rebuilt 350's. It has been repainted with Awlgrip? Not sure of the quality of paint. Rest of boat looks good for it's age.
