Yes, that boat is a Cigarette. A friend of mine bought that boat from Don I believe in the early 70's. He kept it for a couple of years and sold it. If you want more info I will give him a call. He ran it on Barnegate Bay in N.J. He also bought a 2 seat Criterion in the early 80's and only kept that for a couple years. I had a ride in that one. What really sticks out in my mind were all that gauges all over the place. The whole dash was covered with gauges.

the other Scott- congrats on your boat! I know his was all blue like yours and came with a twin turbo motor which he took out and sold, to put in a 330 merc. I am probably going to see him sometime tomorrow, I'll chew on his ear and see what I get out of him.
When he had "The Cigarette" it was called The Little Cigarette. I never got a ride in that one, although I did see it rip the water up once. He always refers to it as a cigarette. Hummmm

I was always under the impression that that boat was a Cary, named Cigarette, after the rum runner. Gotta admit tho, that pic is one of my all time favorites. I havent been able to find that pic large enough to use as wallpaper. If anyone has one, shoot me a copy via email. I'll owe you a beer for sure. wink Use the link here, or use mailto:mcgary@donzi.netmcgary@donzi.net</a> (thanks HM :) )
Anotherscott, Scott pearson used to have a criterion II a while back. I wonder if your buddy bought his old boat? Apparently scott lost track of it, and doesn't know where it is today.

I would also be interested in info on the Criterion.

Poodle, lay down that check book and back slowly away from the computer.

I was talking to my friend today , and remembered to ask about The Little Cigarette. He said it was a 32' Cary, and he bought it from Don without any motors or hardware. He brought it up here to "Joisey" and put a pair of 496 Mercs in it. I will see him in a few weeks and will see what paper work he has on the Criterion II. Didn't forget about you Poodle. And to those who called it as a Cary, your beer is in the mail :D

How many days till winter is over?

Scott, if it's an early 32' Cary, they probably put 482's in it, which is a +.400 tall deck 427 truck block, and some stroke... I just happen to have one of those blocks here, with a certain Criterion's name all over it..

Jim, You may be right, we were both on our cell phones, and I am lucky I heard 32' Cary :D
Your boat will need wings with that engine! Can't wait to hear from you when that baby arrives.

Elton Cary was our insurance man at Donzi. Rather than paying the past due premiums, Don gave him the mold for 008, the cut-down 28'. Elton turned it into a successful fishing boat (still built by a couple of companies). Because of TWO noncompetes, Don put Elton's name on the boat named "The Cigarette", which was the third boat that he had with the same name. All of the previous boats were named "Claudia", for his beautiful daughter. The rest, as they say, is history........

...Funny how we amble on before someone who was there chimes in and sets us straight..not that some of you were too far off !

Hey BROWNIE .. can you remember building a NOVA 24 in the late 60's (I think) with 2 HMs 290 Vee Drives that went to Bermuda ? wink

Sure. It was built for John Burland, a fine and gentle fellow. Interestingly enough, I am looking at a 1968 24' like that to restore.

Brownie ... your memory is very good, even though JG is a pretty memorable guy.
I was just a youngster when that boat hit the island and no performance boat nuts have been the same since !
I will always remember how amazed I was every time I saw it.IMO it was years ahead of its time and if one was built today to original specs it would still be a show stopper . It was THAT boat that caused something to twig in me that led to all of this so I have YOU to thank for that..isn't it great to be able to influence people that you've never met ?
I was lucky enough to have a friend who knew John's sons well and was able to go out for a ride once or twice... once in small craft warnings in the open Atlantic.Thats how they used that boat !
John now has a Cary 28 hull with a deck finished to his unique requirements.
He still causes a stir whenever he shows up in a boat. What a guy ..

I might add that it is a real priviledge to have you on this board.. I mean .. would'nt the guys on Ferrari or Porsche.net kill to be able to speak with Enzo or Dr Ferdnand ?

Allan, Didn't Bill Wishnick own Nova back then? And thats where the name "Boss O' Nova" came from? And since you drove the "Broad Jumper" can you tell me where the that name came from? Since I have been using the "Big Broad Jumper" name for all these years. I allways have to tell the story of the boats I would see at Challenger in the 60's.

It's great to read your posts. Keep them coming.
