I am looking to replace the old Bennett trim tabs on my '74 Magnum Maltese. The hydorlic hose is leaking and it may be time to upgrade. With the motors and drives (SBC & Volvo 290) I estimate low 60s top speed (with the wind and going down hill). But I spend most of my time at about 3200 RPMs. What would your recomindation be?

The 280 K-Planes mounted 3/4" above the bottom work great on my Magnum 27 Sport.

Forrest, will those be overkill for my top speed?

I am using Bennet ST16 with twin cylinders.
If you ride in ruff sea and speed over 50mph Bennet will not recommend them BUT the price is 750 US Dollars in Sweden.
Thats why I installed them. Low budget.
I dont have any problem but I have only used them for 50 hours. And I dont really use them unless the boat is overloaded like / or like \.
Hope you understand.

Tell me more about the 280 K_Planes.
Price ?
Where to buy ?

Buy the way.
Have you seen the Magnum 27 for sale on boattraderonline. 5.000 dollars. Have anybody of you any information on this boat. Is it really a boat from 2001?

Staffan,

The boat for sale on Boattrader is structurally sound. It raced last year in APBA, winning several races. Cosmetically it needs work. George who ran it last year bought another hull and sank the "new" boat in Daytona-he should have kept the Magnum! I believe it is a 1969/70 hull and was refurbushed in 2001.E-mail me if you want more info.

I've never seen more 27/28' Magnums for sale at any one time than now. $5K looks tempting, but I'm too busy for another boat project these days. I got that beach house on a canal that needs a second floor.

Staffan, 280 K-planes have been around for along time. They are built by Mercury Marine and are made of heavy cast aluminum have two sepatate pumps. 280 K-Planes are available new at CP Performance (http://www.cpperformance.com) for just under $1600/pr. I bought mine used for $750/pr some time ago.

Forrest, you forgot to tell him that the K-Planes also:

1. Don't creep back
2. The boat can land on them after it leaves the water
3. They are Hyd. up and down.
4. They look good too.

Regarding K-Planes

I was looking on CP Performance
Great site

Whats the difference between K-Planes (150,280 etc) and Kiekhafer K-Planes ?

Thank you all.

Dave is right. K-planes can take a beating in the roughest of water without the fear of bending or breaking.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the model number such as 150, 280, 380, etc. is the area of one tab in square inches.

The K-planes and the Kiekhaefer s you mention are the same. 110S for up to 25' boats are discontinued

the 150S are for 21 to 30'
280S are for 31 to 40'
300S are for 31 to 40'
380S are for 31 to 40'
450S are for 40' and up

Mounting is the same for all but the 110S and the 450S. They are all slightly different in shape.

there is also a compitition series for the 300,380.450. and a 600 designated as the "C" series.

Arenson inddustries also has rocker tabs used by some with good results but ther has to be no hook in the hull to use them.

Is there a used market for these items? I need to remember the budget.

With your smaller engine (less weight in rear)
the 150S tabs should work well. Ask in the offshoreonly forum some one might know of a set or were to purchase new ones for a good price they list for 2725.00 a set but they can be had for a lot less. Also can be found on E-bay sometimes. I am probably going to use this modle on my 23'7" Sunsation with a big block. The 280 and 380 tabs are the most common. Over tabing can get a bit harry... also go for the mechanical indicators.
