I have a friend looking at the following boat.

It is supposedly a 1980 26ft Formula. It needs engines (small block chevy). It has alpha outdrives that are in good shape. The guys wants 2600 dollars for it. Is this reasonable? Is this a desirable boat? The stringers and transom are sound.

I'm not sure which model that is. It looks similar to a 242, but with more freeboard. That raised cuddy leads me to believe it's in the old SC series, which I assume stands for Sport Cuddy. My 20 SC also has a raise deck, the 242 does not. I can tell you they are well made boats. I'm redoing my 20, it's an 81 and some of the wood and screws still look like brand new. When I had the drive and transom assembly off, the transom was solid as a rock. In that era, the decks were not bonded to the hull. I only found one piece of rotten wood on the boat, it was the dashboard peice over the gauges.

If the boat suits his needs, and he doesn't mind not going too fast, it would be a project that can be something solid when he is done.

Steal the deal! One thing I would check into, my 23 had the stepped transom with Volvo drives. When I put tabs I mounted them where you see the marks on that boat, problem was they were to close to the drives and would blow them out, Had to glass blocks on the trasom and move them out board. Try to find someone that knows if that same problen exsists on that model. No big deal just as usual more work.

We looked at the boat. They were not alphas but the previous version of mercruiser drive. The vent windows were missing. The owner said that they blew off at 75mph. I asked if it happened when he was towing it behind his truck. That is the only way that boat would go 75mph. He said it would previously did 75 with (2) 400 small block engines.

The trailer is in nice shape. It need ALL the drivetrain. Hull is in good shape. Interior is a 70's vintage interior. He will take 1800 dollars for it.

That looks like a 262 LS, made in mid 80's for just a few years, never a big seller like the 242 or 222 was, freeboard was too high for what length it was, kinda looked fugly..

Now that it has been deemed "FUGLY" the HM would not touch it with someone elses ten foot pole :D :D

The drives are the MR type, they are basically the same as an alpha. There is one difference, but I can't remember right now. I agree with HM, the only way it saw 75 was behind a BIG truck. $1800 is a damn good price though.

A trailer for $1800 and get a free Formula - looks like a good deal to me.
