Well I have my projects for the winter done and I must admit I had some moments but here it is external hydro power steering for under $1000.00 and $200.00 of it was a power steering pump, bracket, pulley and a spacer. http://www.donzi.net/photos/100-0054_img.jpg

I replaced the rubber boots, trim hoses, trim wires, greased u-joints output bearing and rebuilt the trim tab cylinders. http://www.donzi.net/photos/100-0055_img.jpg

It was a lot of work but I managed to use the original tilt wheel helm. http://www.donzi.net/photos/100-0057_img.jpg

and the refinished teak stripe.

and a video (http://www.donzi.net/photos/100-0053_mvi.avi) of the steering in action.

Its going to be 80 degrees tomorrow guess who's leaving work early... :D

James,I took my cig out for the first time tonite with the new steering and what a difference,It was well worth the time spent on making it.So you want part no's do ya....it may cost ya a ride in your 16 :D first of all you are going to need a milling machine to make this adventure worth your time, the brackets and clevis ends that I made saved many $$$$. Here are the cylinders (http://www.baileynet.com/baileynet/productBrowse.asp?sku=286202) that I used you will have to mill both ends to fit your brackets and clevis ends. This is the helm control (http://www.h-ri.com/Product/Steering_systems/Steer_sys_helm_details.html) you will also need a steering post to fit with it,I used parker (http://www.parker.com/) fittings and hoses they were the best for price, these are the big hitters, you will need a filter and tank and can buy anywhere.I made all of my parts out of 4140 and finished them with black epoxy,I dont plan on running in salt water so I didnt use stainless.Check out imcomarine (http://www.imcomarine.com/nevadaindex.html) to get an idea of what you are going to need and how to hook up wink and finally read the first few pages of this post (http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32320) this is what I used to get going on it.Have fun and let me know if you need anything else.

thanks Smoothie!

actually i've been considering the imco single ram assist system which runs off of your existing power steering ram... but with an external cylinder attached to the drive and transom... you retain your cable helm... this may work exceptionally well.. i'd like to drop down a bit in cylinder size to maybe an inch rod. no worries sir... i have more machine tool access than i would ever know what the heck to do with... have any prints for your clevis ends and modifications you made to the cylinder ends?

THANKS

James,
I did everything in Esprit 3-D solids and wrote cnc programs from them so if you decide to do some I can make you drawings from the solids. http://www.donzi.net/photos/clevis.JPG

Nice work Smoothie!! At first I didn't realize it was an original. Design and workmanship appear to be first rate and on a great looking boat too!
