I am currently looking at a 1974 24' Cigarette with twin 6 cylinders. My question is: How hard is it to change into a single engine? I am pretty damn handy when it comes to 'glass, bodywork, paint, etc. What are some of the factors I have to look at before I attemp something like this?

Also anyone know where I can get a 24 or 27 Cigarette?

Gut the transom from the inside and rebuild it, try to get some answers on X demension before you cut the new drive hole. A new 572 Chevy crate motor would be sweet!

donzinuts,

i'm sorry but i'd have to disagree with mop here. the boat you are referring to is VERY rare if it is indeed a Cigarette. this is only the second one i've ever heard of and it would be a shame if it were cut up and made into a single engine boat.........

check out the archives on thunderboatalley.com to see what a true twin engine 24 cigarette looks like.

btw, if you decide to pass on this boat, let me know, i may be interested.

Seano,
It's a 1974 24' Cigarette with twin 6 cylinders. That is all I know about the boat. It is actually ITTLFLI on the post. He sent 2 pictures to me and I am trying to post them! I have been loooking for a cigarette for some time know but I do not want twins....double the maintenance!!! If I remember you had a 28SS? How much fuel did that sucker burn? That is my main concern about twins. Anyway I think he is a little too high in price @ $7,000.00 firm with all the work thatneeds to be done. But would be a very nice looking boat if every redone right!
Let me try and post the pics

Boy do I stand corrected! I think the price is pretty decent for that rare beauty. Man if I had deep pockets I would buy it do up a pair of 292 truck sixes. Good cams, 4 barrel manifolds they will take a bore job of 125 I know I use to race them. No hole shots though the sixes have gobs of torque. no problem with Volvo drives but may take out the Mercs. The fuel thing is not near as bad as you would think, granted mine was in a 52 Chevy with 4:11 gears. I would run from Eglin in Fla to New York on leave and get 22 MPG running like a twenty year old does. I noticed that rope locker hatch same as the Monza I have on my site pretty crude, pull it and polish it. BUY THE BOAT I think you will come out good in the end.

----Other than color a very cool boat! How much can twin sixs swill? Is there room for a couple of small V8 fords or,dare I say it,chevy V8s?Would the V8s actually be a bit lower in over-all height?Am I addicted to twins?Update at 11:00...........Bill S

That Cig is a find! Very rare. Definitely worth restoring.

A few years back, I drove down to a rough part of Miami to look at a 24 Cig with a single big block and TRS but without a teak deck advertised in the Boat Trader mag. Once I got there, the only thing rougher looking than the neighborhood was the 24 Cigarette I came to see. Peeling red paint that appeared to be only about a year or two old at the most, ragged interior, and totally beat, but he worst part of it was that the boat had been converted from the original twin inline-six Mercruisers to the single big block. Also, it was obvious where the original engines had been. You know, I always like it when you talk to a seller for 45 minutes on the phone asking him a ton of questions in order to decide if it is worth driving 700 miles round trip with a load of money in your pocket and he tells you without hesitation how clean and perfect the boat is down to every detail, bla, bla, bla . . . lesson learned.

Looks like it had a bow rail at one time..

if it's seaworthy, I think 7k is right on target.

J

oh yeah, leave it as a twin

I wounder how tuff it would be to marinize a pair of the new inline chevy 6s under the hatch.

The only thing really wrong with the boat are the six cylinders!!! There is nothing like a big block rumbling the docks!!! I have to admit I like the V8 sound. Makes my blood run! Anyway by the talk of everyone here I should not buy and turn into single. Don't wanna destroy a piece of boating history. But if anyone is interested the person selling is Byron @ 513-470-8480.

Anyone know a 24 or 27 Cigarette like this one with single engine? :)

Hi guys! I am the one selling this Cigarette for a buddy. He never gets on the internet so I said I would get it out here for all you freaks to see (me included) :D He is at $7000 firm. The boat is in Cincinnati. It does run and is seaworthy....but most of us would like to do a total resto!! This is a very very rare boat and as mentioned above I have only seen one other one. Call my cell if interested 513-470-8480.

Right now those are the only pic I have. I will get more this weekend.

Don't let the fuel usage scare you. I have twin 350's in my 242 Formula. It doesn't burn anymore fuel than my 18 foot open fish with a single 175 o/b. And I'm not burning any $14 a gallon oil either. Like I always say, gas is the cheapest thing I ever buy for the boat. I'd like to rack up about a $3000 gas bill a year. That means I've done a heck of a lot of boating.

now that looks like a cool project. do you know what the original color was? I'd like to see some more photos before I get crazy thinking about this one...can you post some more?

how are the stringers/transom? Has the bottom been painted?

Not sure about the new inline sixes, the marine parts for the old sixes are still around. A punched 292 with 5 carbs worked head, Schaller 1/4 speed cam turned 13.1 89mph in the quarter in my 3,700 Chevy coupe 9 inch slicks no posi and lots of tire smoke. I think it would be a blast cleaned up with a pair of juiced 6's!

I believe Clifford makes the 4 bbl manifold conversion for the 250-292. Add a 450 cfm 4bbl, towing spec. cam, pocket/match port work, 1.6 roller rockers, and the 292 goes out to 305 inches REAL EASY wink

I say it's worth 225hp each when done and lighter than a SBC to boot. It's already got the good low gears in the drives ,so just up dig up some Ultra's with about 2" bite more and keep it *stock appearing*.

How cool would that be??

J, MOP, Poodle, Seano, all, I agree, but correct me if I'm wrong, but I think those 165HP sixes were coupled to Mercruiser "R" outdrives. So how 'bout twin 292 blocks, KB pistons, cam, worked heads, etc., for about 250 to 300 HP each. Find a couple of Alpha SS drives for icing on the cake, and I think that you would not only have a serious coolness factor going, but that 24 Cig would sound good and run just great.

I am interested in seeing the pics, but as much as I like the teak decks and twins...I'm gonna pass on this one and stick to a single engine...the Cafe Racer is enough wokr as it is, I don't want my toy to be another headache...soo...I'm still looking for a 24 Cig Firfox or 20 Cig

BTW, I'm also going to post the 24 on thunderboatalley.com in case anyon is interested.
