Rick,...Is this still for Sale?...I am planning a Disney Christmas, West Coast. Family hates the boat but would be OK with one if "it doesn't go over 60mph...???Likes the nostalgia aspect...(I Think) anyways, there could be some travel in the future and I hate being a "Captive Audience" in the land of half a dozen "Real" Donzi's...I should just go to the "HOMELAND" of these Beasts. Any pictures of "Mother Mary" hovering over the boat included?... I'm grasping at straws, some unreasonable, I know, but I don't want to buy one of these "things" just because that is all that is available locally...Let me know. The V drive I already know is not real other than the fact that it is a V-drive...It is not a Donzi rendition...

Lenny,

There are NO, I mean NO possible excusses....

Chris, what about the fact that today (Thursday) was the Canuck bucks singlemost drop in 22 months and is just barely off breaking an all time record lowwwwwww....(who cares, I'm used to this scenario now, our buck, so you know, was better than yours in '71,...what happened?...uuughhh) This IS NOT an EXCUSE!... Rick, Scott, ( everyone of them) even the MADPOODLE, Gene D, BLEWBYU, etc. My only problem with Ricks boat is the fact that it is priced PERFECTLY and even low for what it is and offers, but is a little high for what I want to spend on my "first DONZI" (even tho it is ALMOST EXACTLY WHAT I WANT) I'll have to cough up some coin for a windshield, ...probably $1000.00 US installed...I haven't a clue. This will put it about $15,000US which is about $23,000.00 CAN.(today, at this very moment, things don't look good tho, idiots in charge...) It's a great deal I know!!!,..but I am going to pump salt through this puppy and be an ocean boy, (Lakes will be RARE!!!)and want to travel upwards of 75-100 nautical miles on a couple of occasions during the summer with family aboard and want to know that I don't have an overheating CAN AM in rush hour, hi-po screamer, running SALT,...basically, WRECKING IT!!!. I feel better with a stock engine,(350/260) sacrifice performance (a bit/lot) and feel more comfortable out in the middle of nowhere knowing that chances of survival are over 50%.

On a completely different note,... Chris,(CDMA) do you know who Bill (William) Garden is in your studies? I spent a lot of time with him when I was young and he showed me how he layed out hulls, lofted and all the "WILD" stuff you are probably learning/understanding now. I spent many hours watching him at his drafting table "working". He was living on Deer Island (his private Island) at the time and I went there often to see him. He had "Ways",(train tracks and such from many outbuildings leading to the Ocean.)where he had several projects under construction, always.I was living about 1 mile away, by water, with my parents, at there summer house and would spend EVERYDAY from 7am till 9pm from May till Sept on the water. He wanted to buy my 1908, lapstrake "Clinker" with inboard off me/DAD as it was built by some friends of his, the "Jones Brothers" at the turn of the century. Funny how things end up in life isn't it. Never dreamed I'd be on the "INTERNET" talking to people 3500 miles away, about a passion, upbringing,... and feeling at home... (other than the odd sarcasm)Oh, and it worked by the way,...I had my skin thickened the other day. I'm OK now,... I think? This Brownie thing is too COOL http://www.donzi.net/ubb/eek.gif I wish I had your peoples' background before all this "hunting and the vertical learning curve". If I win a LOTTERY here I will come down to Florida and buy ALL used DONZI's under 19' and YOU PEOPLE will have to come to 'KA- KNAW- DUH' to buy them... http://www.donzi.net/ubb/smile.gifCHEERS...LENNY http://www.donzi.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Lenny,

I know very well who he is. I have not directly studied him but have watched his work and admired his designs for years.

I see your points regarding Rick R's boat however a wild hi-po screamer I would not call it. It is built, I belive, to a Mercruiser crate motor specs. In reality 420/454 is realitvely mild. A few guys get 420 reliable hp out of SB. To me Rick's motor is somewhat mild. I mean it is like classic cars. You can't resote one and make money. The people who build them loose the money. I spend $3500 for my rough but running hull. I figured I would do what was necessary to get it where I wanted and enjoy it. Close to an additional 8K later it still is not done. The stuff adds up. I will never get all that money back but that is ok because it is my boat and my passion. All I am trying to say to you is that I would have been better to get a loan and buy Genuine Risk.... I know for a fact Paul O feels the same way.

Hey just an aside... Have you ever ridden in a Donzi?

PaulO

Amen,
Chris is accurate. Having bought similar boats at the same time, Chris and I often have that conversation that concludes with,
" Yea, It's getting there but, It would have cost a lot less in the long run and eliminated countless hours of work if I would have spent the money up front and bought Ricks boat"!

Yeah, this is probably true...
But!
You would have never got the priceless experience you received by getting in there and doing what you did.
Invaluable.
Also, PaulO, you did one hell of a job installing that Merc with no jigs.
I'm standing up and applauding.

Thanks Guys your making my head swell http://www.donzi.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Chris is correct the 420 is not a radical engine, its economical,
idles good, runs on 93 octane, and boy does she sound sweet
at 5000RPM http://www.donzi.net/ubb/eek.gif

Merc 454/385 Mag vs Merc 454/420

The short blocks are the same (except mine has better;
rings [Total Seal], timing chain [Coyles True Roller]
and my bottom end parts have been balanced

The differences

420 has Stainless intake valves (mine only has stainless exhaust valves)
800CFM,4150 Holly (Mine has a 830CFM, 4150 Holly w/annular
discharge nozzels)
MSD Ignition
Drier aftermarket exhaust (Merc uses Gil, I have IMCO)
Crane 132561 Cam (I also used Crane Lifters)
Crane Extruded Roller Rockers
Heavy Duty double springs w/damper

Gene is right you all are getting a great learning experience.
As you can tell as soon as I get a new toy I have to take it apart.
I like making things run better, faster or more efficiently.
I hate shoddy workmanship
and repairing someone elses mistakes http://www.donzi.net/ubb/mad.gif
Know what I mead PaulO?

Aint those rockers purdy!!!!!
http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=1261326&a=9670185&p=31955379&Sequence+0&res=high

BTW Len, I HATE the winshield on my 22, all it does is deflect
the wind into your face and eyes.
The top is at chest level.

I agree w/ Rick about the windshield on the 22s. Mine sucks! My 18' without a windshield was a much more pleasant boat to drive.

Originally, the 22 had "eyelashes" on the windshield -- which, admittedly, look goofy, but they work. The previous owner replaced this with a flat piece and without the eyelashes, at speed, the wind wash hits me right in the face, eyes and ears.

Some time in the boat's history, the original windshield -- with the eyelashes -- got cracked w/ people climbing over. When the previous owner replaced it, he put one on w/o the 'em -- he didn't like they way they looked. He never drove fast anyway...

For me, the situation really ruins the boating experience! I've even thought about doing away w/ the windshield altogether...
Actually, I'm going to have some eyelashes fabricated and will install them this winter. Either that, or I'm going to fabricate a new center section -- with eyelashes...

Rick, Is the bulge in the engine cover your work to fit over the engine? I don't think I've ever seen one like that. It is very smoothly done but I'm still guessing it was adapted.

The raised hatch was stock form 90 to around 93. I think it was necessary because the King Cobra engine package is taller than the Merc.

Still look'in, happily, http://www.donzi.net/ubb/smile.gif and biding my time. Holidays start again Jan01/2001. Travel is in my future...Doubt I'll ever find a big block '18 as clean as this WAS for $13G THO! I did find a "fresh" 502 and bravo for $3500 Can used one season. Got a hull to put it in?

rayjay
12-06-2000, 03:49 PM
Len,

That's a real good price, especially in CDN$. Pick it up and look for a hull. You can always turn it over later if you find a "perfect" boat or swap the 502 into whatever you find.

You know our adage, if more power is better too much power is just pu..r..r..fect!
