I have seen a lot of discussion on props for Bravos and Alphas but little to none on OMCs. Thought I would pulse the OMC guys and see what you are running. Format in the following order - prop, drive, ratio, RPMs, approx. HP, approx. MPH, boat. My data is as follows:

22 Raker, King Cobra, 1.43, 5100RPM, 400HP, 70MPH, 18 Classic

Here's what I have for the 22 w/ 454 motor.
21 Viper, King Cobra/1.48, 5150 RPMS, 350+HP, 65.5 MPH
Soon to have a 23 Turbo bolted on.

Surely there are more than 2 of us OMC guys?

Back to the top looking for more response....

Yup a few of us lurking out here, I'm running a 16 with Ford 302 a mild cam and 351 heads. 1.5 ratio and turning a Viper 23" around 44-4600 RPM I think I am running upper 50's. Its a fair bit faster than a V6, but the one out my way with the 260 Merc is a couple of miles faster.

I stopped by East Tennesse Prop yesterday looking at props. If you want more RPMs they had a nice looking used Yamaha 21" (small diameter) for sale. You have to talk to them to see if it will fit the King Cobra.

I am looking for a 21x14.5 performance prop for the 22 (like a Turbo, Hydromotive or Mirage) and a 15" pitch 15.25 diameter utility prop for the "Other"

BTW Michigan Wheel for sale in "Parts for Sale"

18 feet, sbc 350, 1.5 ratio, not sure of rpms as the gauge jumps around quite a bit but it says 4100-4600 occassionally, just over 60 mph, 14.25x23" Raker <way too much bow lift for me...all it does is air out> I wanted to try a 4-blade prop, but all the other guys said it would just slow me down...I want top speed. The stock one I had was 14.25x21 Viper. That worked very well, but I KNOW I can get more speed out of the sbc. My next BIG purchase will be a Cleaver....

George

George - is that drive a Cobra? I assumed all of the King Cobras were @ a ratio of 1.43?

I also thought all of the Rakers came in a even # pitch, i.e., 22" and 24". Did you have it reworked to a 23"?

And what I really want to know about is the cleaver - have you found one for the OMC? Who makes it and where can one be found?

OMC...REVISITED!!!

I am in trouble. I "lost" to a LOUDER boat today, and I need some CHEAP POWER! I want to start with the PROP, but I also want to install the Q/Q exhaust, as I am running the stock thru-hub stuff.

I am also interested in installing hydraulic steering. Any OMC guys with that on their Donzis?

I e-mailed Stainless Marine last summer, and got a price of $1,000 for the Q/Q system. Who can install this? I am NOT about to cut holes in my boat.

What are my/our other options? I DO NOT want to "lose" again!

George

Have 350 SBC running 15x17 aluminum right now. About 49MPH @ 49 RPMs.

Raker props docome in even #s as well. I have been considering a 21 Raker as a similar boat to mine that I looked at had one and was pretty fast. I have heard they have bow lift also. What exactly is that? And, what are the negative effects?

I am looking to probably go 19 pitch ss but haven't decided yet.

My "Raker" prop is 14.5 X 22. I replaced the stock "Viper" prop that measures 14.25 X 21.

Bow lift means exactly that...the front (or tip = BOW) of the boat is lifted more with a bow-lifting prop. This usually equals less handling and more top-speed. But, as with my boat, at the limit and all trimmed-out, the boat is LOOSE! It requires your FULL attention, as should be the case ALL the time anyhow.

I am just looking for something with good/okay handling that has a HUGE top-end. I am not interested in bow-lift, just speed.

Also, my "Raker" prop airs-out a lot in turns and such. This means that the prop basically cavitates in the water and just spins in the air, freely...pushing zero water. This is also bad for the prop (and your motor) as the prop COULD develop divots from the air hitting the prop.

So...has anyone ever tested a Cleaver on an OMC or is it a waste of time? Does anyone have any USED props...like Turbo? I am looking for 14.5 X 22-23 or so. I am open for new ideas.

...just washed out the engine compartment and now I am ready for another year.

Cheers,
George

G John - I have never experienced caitation with my Raker 22. But I am like you - I would like to experiment with some other props. Yea, at 65 up it does require a steady hand...

I was hoping that changing out the prop for the "perfect" one would yield a better top speed...and at the same time would be rather cheap, compared to new exhaust or any other modification that will gain you 4+ mph, like my switch from the stock Viper to my current Raker prop did.

Anyone have any ideas for us OMC boys?

George

I just got an e-mail back from Corsa Performance, and they will charge me $1100 for the Captain's Call exhaust and $2100 for the Manifolds and pipes, whatever those are (pipes, I mean).

I am not really interested in dismantling the engine, and I am also looking for cheap fixes, so I will prolly go for the Captain's Call for now. Does anyone have a discount card or anything? I know it will cost me lots of money to upgrade my Donzi, but I was hoping to get things a bit cheaper than $1100 for one part. Anything will help!

Any ideas?

Cheers,
George

J, thank you! Took your advice, Scott and I are chatting about it. I am getting closer to my dream-exhaust. Soon, I will have what I want...soon.
