Can you guys recommend some tabs for my boat. It's a Classic 18 with a 350 Mag/Alpha. I called Bennet and the guy I talked to didn't seem very knowledge about Donzis (said most Donzis are in the 40 mph range). He recommended the M120 but then when I asked about the ST9 Sport Tab he recommended the ST12. I like the construction/looks of the Sport Tab 9/12 but don't think I want/need dual actuators or the size of the ST 12. Opinions?

Traveler, These are way cool tabs. http://www.donzi.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=008683#000002 Keep in mind that these are way cool, but all you get is the tab. They assume that you already have some bennett tabs, and will reuse pump, lines, rams, etc.

I have single ram bennetts on my criterion, and while i havent had an issue so far, i may upgrade to a dual ram system next season.

Traveler,

I am Thomas and I work for Bennett Marine in the Client Services department.

Installing trim tabs on your Donzi 18 shouldn't be very hard at all, since we have quite a few trim tab kits that should meet your needs. Really the first thing to do is to start by checking your Available Mounting Area (determine by taking a measurement 3" to 4" in from your chine and measuring to within 8" of the centerline of your outdrive), so we will have a good idea of how much mounting room we have to work with and if you have any mounting limitations. Also, how you drive it, speed capabilities and what you wish to gain by installing trim tabs will dictate the correct trim tab set to install. Please check your transom for these measurements and get back to me with your findings & answers as soon as you can, so I can provide a few different trim tab sets for you to choose from!

I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,
MJ Thomas

Tabman,
Thanks for the reply. If I understand the dimensions you are looking for, measuring the transom along the running surface of the hull it is 34" from the chine to the centerline of the hull (drive). Keeping back 8" from the drive and 4" from the chine leaves 22". I don't the get the 8" dimension. If a tab were that close to the drive it looks like the drive would hit it when it swings?? Anyway, I'm mainly looking to use the tabs at lower speeds to keep the bow down when the boats full of people and for lateral trim.
I like the looks and construction of the sport tabs but am not sure which size or the need for dual rams. I've had several boats in the past but this is my first performance boat. The boat runs mid 60's now but want to make a choice that will still be appropriate with an increase in speed. Some recommendations would be appreciated Thanks.

Traveler,

Ok, from your measurements you have the room to install the ST9's. The ST9’s are 12 x 9 w/1” Up Fins on the sides, manufactured with heavy 12gauge 304 Stainless Steel, single actuator per tab, high-gloss black powder coat finish and come standard with our Rocker Switch Control (RS1000). You should consider installing the Trimdicator system (IP1010A, $289, http://www.bennetttrimtabs.com/trimd.htm) with your trim tab system too, since they provide you with real time trim tab indication and performance vessels need this information for easy & accurate trim tab placement. The kit includes two displays that can be flush or surface mounted to your helm and provides you with the Deflection in Degrees with the LCD's & Deflection in Percentage with the LED's. Also, our Auto Tab Retractor (AR512, $77) would be a good choice for your installation (ATR info http://www.bennetttrimtabs.com/atr.htm), since it was designed to retract the tabs to their full up setting every time you turn the engine’s ignition key to the “off” position there by protect them from trailer, lift &/or rack storage bunk damage. Many clients can forget to fully retract them before loading their vessel, but you never forget to turn the engine off! Please contact any of your local marine dealers, catalog &/or Internet retailers to order any of our products and you can use the above part numbers to shop around for your best deals!

If you have anymore questions, please feel free to contact me.
