Fellas,
Anyone have anything good/bad to say regarding Hynautic hydraulic external steering? In specific, the H-41 helm, and
K-5 cylinder.

Nate, I looked into that system a few years back. I've talked to a few people they had good luck with the system. I have a catalog with the ram & helm dimensions if you need any info.

I have a Hynautic H-41 helm in my 16 Donzi and sometimes I think it steers a little too quick and with too much effort. For a larger boat I would consider the H-40 helm which has a greater hydraulic advantage, but also adds another about 3/4 to 1 turn lock to lock. What ever you do, use good quality hydraulic hoses. Copper lines are much cheaper, but are a real pain to run and have no flexibility whatsoever. Forget about plastic lines, they just won't cut it and may burst under a high load.

Forrest,
Do you use the K-5 external cylinder, or do you have an internal?

I have the H-50 or H-51 unit on my 1968 16'. The reservoir is inside the engine compartment. It is great at higher speeds but does add lots of extra steering at low speeds when docking. I've just gotten better at aiming for my goal at lower speeds.

Way to go Scot V for fixing it.

I'm running a unbalanced internal cylinder . . . not sure of the model number though.
