Ok,

I am off to the south shore this Sunday to go for ride in a boat w/ 2 454s. It appears they may even be magnums. 600 hrs, 1989, new cabs, alt, SS manifolds, risers ( cast), rebuilt heads, new lower end bearings, in boat to hear run, 145 comp, new intakes and that's about all. Asking $1500 each.

It seems like a straight up deal so we will see. I am nearly positive I will have hatch clearence problems so I as looking at a few scoops. It appears during the 70's Donzi had a scoop that I like the looks of and seems plain enough. One can be seen in any picture of Paul's boat but in the 70's brochure pictures in the archives you can see a 18 2+3 baby blue and white with this exact piece. I have deen trying to post a link or get the picture here but to no avail. I would appreciate it if you all could take a look and maybe let me know where to find such a piece...new or used.

Chris

Chris,
I have a friend here in OH that has this scoop on his 78 18' classic. I always thought it was just a aftermarket add-on that someone had put on the boat. (I guess because it is not molded into the hatch.) He recently had 3 1" holes evenly spaced put into it to allow better air flow to the engine. He uses rubber balls to keep the rain out while in storage. Maybe the "Ask the Factory" board could help you out. Since it is bolted on, Donzi must have gotten it from someone aftermarket?

Chris, what you really need is the snorkel scoop off of Don Johnson/Nash Bridges 38' Daytona. http://www.donzi.net/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.donzi.net/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.donzi.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

What you need to do is to measure the distance from the top of the bolt of the rear mount, to the highest thing on the motor, then go and measure the same thing on your motor.
The mounting of the bellhousing to the transom plate is the same for BB's and SB's on the Merc set-up. You will not be changing out engine height per se.
Make that measurement, and I'll bet it will fit. You got a barrel back no? I have 1" spacers on my risers and they just clear the hatch by about 1/4 inch. There is plenty of room for the carb, about 2-3 inches I think.
No scoop! Please!
$1500 for a 454, complete?
Can you say...SCORE!
I'm pretty sure that the risers are the same on the BB's and SB's. Keep some of those other parts.
Oh, and don't forget that if you have that thru hull exhaust, you are going to need to change out the holes. The BB manifolds are wider and I think they may be higher.

Chris,
You need one of these scoops
http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=1273223&a=9426627&p=31510690&Sequence=0&res=high

so you can install one of these

How come the yellow boat tied to the tree in the old 18 brochure looks like it's under water?

Chris, whn you buy the snorkel scoop from Donzi, as RickS suggests, make sure you check the Cameron Diaz option box.

RICKS... the yellow one (probably white without the murky water) has the rope going under water by the 18's bow. You know, this looks like the "PERFECT" project boat for me. Bet I can get a good deal on it if it is still there after 30 years...

Chris, I have one of those old Donzi fiberglass hood bubble/scoops around here somewhere, but it's a little rough. Since it's made out of fiberglass, you can do just anything to it. Email me if you want it and I'll send you a picture.

I always thought a Tear Drop Bubble hood scoop would look awsome on a Donzi. Thats the scoop that Ford put on the Thunder Bolts.
Great looking scoop!!!!

Just cut a hole in the hood put a big a** polished blower in it some tall polished scoops on it , three angles and no one will even know there is a boat attached.

I agree with NJ Scott. I believe that scoope also had screen openings for good air flow into the engine. Ford had a few better ideas.

Actually the FORD Thunderbolt "Scoop" is there to provide hood clearance for the hi-rise heads and manifold, and exhaust the under hood area of hot air. This may not be such a bad idea to help keep a boat motor cool. The Thunderbolt carbs were ducted to the missing high beams.

There are some small pro-stock scoops that were the original inspiration for most of the scoops now used on boats, which may work. Just make sure the back is closed as some scoops are open in back to collect high pressure air from in front of the windshield.

Better yet, just follow BigG's advice and cut a hole in the lid and let a polished blower stick through. No one will ever notice there is no scoop! rayjay

I would volunteer the labour to pop out a pile of copies and/or supply a multi-usable mold but my location might cause too much grif in shipping/duty etc... let me know if anyones interested or I can help.

Len, since the full introduction of NAFTA there are very few things that are made in North America (USA,Canada,Mexico) that are subject to duty. If you guys want, I'll give you an Upstate New York address, clear the goods into Canada, ship them to Len, and then take the finished goods back across the border for re-shipment to Chris. We'd attach a very low value to the part, import it into Canada for inspection by Len, and then re-ship it back into the US on a section 321 without duty or taxes owing because the part is of US origin, and will be valued under $200 USD.

I have the 454 Mag sitting on the engine
stand if you need any measurements.
It has Al high rise w/Weber and 1"spacer.
If the 454 is the base motor do all your
height measurements from the horizontal
line where the intake and block meet.
Don't forget the hatch rises realtive to the
stringers, amidships as you go forward.
Good Luck!

RickR,
Are you doing anything to the 454 while she's out of the boat?
