After riding in Grady's Hornet, I've decided that a Hornet is a very viable alternative to the Classic 18. It's got the space and the ride. Here's one I found on Boat Trader-on-line. The asking price is reasonable, but I'm afraid that the transmission problems could be expensive. Besides, Pensacola is a very long way from Orlando. I think I'll call the guy and see what I can learn before committing to a trip that long. Any thoughts on the right questions to ask? Or maybe somebody knows the boat?

Many thanks,

Phil

Phil,

I could be wrong but I am pretty sure that is Forrest's boat. Small world. I hear it is really nice.

Chris maybe not, looks like it belongs to Robert Kotick that is not in the Registry.

I believe Forrest is in Tallahassee, not Pensacola. I'd have been ecstatic if it'd been him; he's a straight shooter.

So it has BBC outdrive and transmission problems, does that mean that it is a TRS boat?

'78 would make it a model 330, II-TRS or II-TR. 1.30 or 2.0:1 drive ratio. Going by what the guy says in the ad - and thats pretty much meaningless till ya see it - its a good deal even if you have to replace the trans. (http://www.dolleroffshore.com/parts.cfm?c=btpf&m=4&pn=4040&r=4935&psn=180015) Hornets are cool.

No, it's not my Hornet II. If I ever get around to finishing the restoration on mine, I'll probably let it go and take a major beating . . . Oh that makes since! All that's left to do is to shoot the deck with Insigna White Awlgrip and get the rear seats and the padded cockpit ring done by Bilt-Rite. The hull has been done and looks great. The 427 Chevrolet/TRS is ready, though I do have a big capacity cast-aluminum Mercruiser oil pan that I intend to install. It already has a Hardin P1000 offshore exhaust system, Crane H-286-2 camshaft (http://dab7.cranecams.com/SpecCard/DisplayCatalogCard.asp?PN=134241&B1=Display+Card), big oval port heads, Holley intake, Mercrusier/Weber carb, and a Mallory electronic distributor, and it will rattle windows blocks away!

After seeing Grady's Hornet, I'm all fired up on getting back to work on mine. Got to get these new 383s into the Magnum first though.

Hornets are fun boats!

This picture of the 427 in the Hornet has the old Holley 750 cfm carb but all else is the same. Also the Hardins now have the long SS tail pipes that stick through the transom.
